Most of the stories I share happen in the ocean, but this one is about what happens behind the screen🖥️🌊

So here’s a little look at what I’ve been playing around with lately: I-Log footage from the Ace Pro 2.

{SOMEWHERE BETWEEN FEAR AND PURPOSE}

It’s a weird thing to leave your friends, family, job, and home behind to chase something you believe in with nothing but a camera and a pair of fins.

But somehow, doing that has given me experiences I could only dream about when I was a kid.

This post isn’t really about wildlife.

It’s about jumping into the unknown.

We are always told to play it safe. Find something stable. Something that makes sense. Something that puts food on the table.

And honestly, I understand why.

But when I look back at my life, the moments that changed everything came from decisions that didn’t make much sense at the time.

When I first came here, I heard a lot of no’s.

So many that I started questioning myself.

I felt lonely. Out of place. Like I was trying to enter a world that didn’t really want me there.

But I kept asking. Kept showing up. Kept believing there was a place for me.

Eventually, someone gave me a chance.

And I still remember that feeling. After all the doubt and rejection, having someone believe in you, even for a moment, means everything.

This isn’t just about the ocean.

It’s about having something that keeps pulling you forward, even when things get hard.

For me, that has always been the ocean.

I want to spend my life exploring it and sharing it through my work. I want to create images that make people feel something. I want people to care about what is out there.

Because every time I see someone start falling in love with the ocean, I remember why I started doing this in the first place.

I don’t really have a big lesson or advice to give.

I just know that the things that have given me the most meaning in life were on the other side of uncertainty.

And I’m glad I kept going🤍🌊
In the waters of Bahía Magdalena, there is a special tension in the waters.

The Sardines move together like one body, turning fast, staying close, trying to protect each other. Then the Striped marlin start going around them, patient, waiting for the moment.

Little by little they close the circle, and then suddenly, they strike. Silver everywhere, fast movement, chaos for one second.

From outside it looks beautiful, almost like a dance under the water, but in reality it is only survival. One trying to eat, the other trying to stay alive🌊🎣
Sometimes the shot is about an exquisite moment of visual pleasure.

And sometimes, I enjoy not chasing the “wow” shot.

This is Fuvahmulah, without going for the shot. Just sitting back and documenting beauty as it presents itself to you. Textures, bursts of life moving together, a turtle crossing in the distance, a tail passing unexpectedly close.

Sometimes, it is simply about witnessing the calm elegance of the sea.

The elegant and smoothest shark in the Sea of Cortez🦈🤍

Blue sharks are truly majestic to film and, at times, not even shy around the camera. I love when my camera becomes an object of curiosity for them and they can’t help but come closer to investigate.

Lately, I’ve developed an even deeper love for sharks than ever before. Learning how endangered they are, and how much they need our help and protection, makes me want to be there for them in every way I can.

These blues are an absolute gem to encounter here in Baja🦈🌊
Do you know who this eye belongs to?
Swipe to see 👀

Nothing compares to making eye contact with a wild animal.

For a few seconds, everything else disappears. The noise, the thoughts, the human world. It’s just you and another living being sharing the same moment.

I always feel something impossible to explain when this happens. Especially underwater. Looking into the eye of an animal that has existed for millions of years makes you feel small, but also connected to something much bigger.

People see sharks and think about fear. But when you are close enough to look into their eyes, you see something completely different. Calmness. Presence. Elegance.

This is the eye of a tiger shark that I captured during my time in the Maldives onboard, and moments like this are the reason why I fell in love with the ocean in the first place🦈

Every year, the Pacific comes alive in the waters of Magdalena Bay.

Huge baitballs of sardines move through the bay while marlins and sea lions hunt through them nonstop, creating absolute chaos underwater. And that’s just part of it, dolphins, sharks, whales, sailfish and many other species can also show up during the frenzy.

As photographers and observers, we become tiny witnesses inside one of the wildest natural spectacles on Earth, not watching nature from afar, but fully immersed in it.

From all the insane moments I’ve had in the ocean, this remains my favorite by far.
Sardine Run Expedition 2026 🐟

Four days off the grid, based in a remote spot on the edge of the Pacific.

Three full days on the water, hunting for bait balls and swimming with marlins, sea lions, dolphins, sharks, and whatever else decides to join the party.

Evenings are for photography workshops, slowing down, editing together, sharing beers, stories and memories.

Everything is included.

If you’re just starting your journey into underwater photography, this is your place.
If you want to be in the water and come home with the best images of yourself in the wild, this is your place too.

I’m on fire about this. I want to share this place and this passion with you.
But for it to happen, I need you as much as you need me.

Everything is planned, from arrival to the last day.
I only need 6 cool humans to make it real.

So… who’s in for four days of adventure in the Pacific?
Comment 🐟 and I’ll send you all the info..

“Show me your pictures and I will tell you who you are”

Every person sees the world with their eyes, but their interpretation of what they see can be so different. Isnt that fascinating?

Thats photography for me. The fact that every person has their unique way of finding, framing, capturing and presenting a story. Its essentially about vision and identity. Who are we, how do we see the world.

This post is a simple exercise of self reflection. When I think about my way of taking pictures, I often find myself looking for visual pleasure. What is visual pleasure for you Xabi? Well when I say that, Im usually looking for patterns, textures, things that align for a brief amount of time to create complex yet tidy compositions.

Sometimes, we just take what our eyes see for granted, without asking ourselves if a second look wouldnt reveal a story worth telling, and this post is about that. Going beyond our first look, and finding our own vision📷🤍
