Kicked a sea urchin while capturing one of the best shots of my life. This was my first time filming surfing, so I missed the memo about wearing fins and all that—but honestly, worth it for these frames.
STORY TIME:
My father rarely spoke of his childhood, growing up across the world in a place called Lebanon—however one story I remember so well as if it were my own memory was that of the massive ships anchored off the coast that he and his friends would dive off of. He told me of the days he and his friends would hangout with the crew, eat with them, and watch sunsets.
To me, the craziest part was never about the wild adventures he had, but about the beautiful, kind-hearted people who lived in that magical place, and the way they treated strangers. I never understood why he left.
This video was taken a year after I manifested getting “stuck” in Lebanon during the pandemic of 2020. I headed out with my adventurous friends and beautiful girlfriend as my stunt driver. We were shooting a film and capturing some of the most epic photos ever with behind the camera when the crew peeked over the edge and started waving at us. I had only been speaking Lebanese for 4 months, though they seemed to be asking us to drive our jetskis around to the other side of the ship. As we drove alongside this massive ship, I saw the crew lower down the ladder. I had dreamt of this moment my whole life.
After we shot the video above, the captain yelled down at my friends and I, instructing us not to leave. Although I didn’t understand why, I waited patiently as he disappeared inside the ship. A few minutes later, he came back bearing gifts. He and the crew tossed us the best treats they had onboard, and some Coca Cola. We thanked them profusely and packed up our gear for the long ride to shore.
As we were about to leave, my new friends, Karate kid and Omri, shouted asking for a quick ride on the jetski. Long story short, we flipped the jetski and neither of them knew how to swim! Everyone was okay, and so was all our camera gear 😅. They climbed back aboard and the whole crew waved us a warm goodbye.
I was sure the day couldn’t get any more magical, though during our long drive back to land under a full moon, my girlfriend told me she loved me for the first time.
