The real life superheroes behind the animated characters have had quite the year since you met them last. Born with the same kidney disorder, Alesha and Adam visited the children’s hospital 3 times a week for 5 years to sit through four hour sessions of haeomodialysis. As much as they loved their Pelican Ward family, their lives were very restricted. The family could never travel far and because of their hospital schedule, it was difficult for Alesha and Adam to join clubs and do many of the normal activities that children of their age enjoy. Their mum Shela, also needed to monitor them both closely so that they didn’t become too exhausted.
But within the past year, both Adam and Alesha have had their long awaited kidney transplants, meaning that they’re now free to enjoy sunny days like today just like their friends. Shela says Alesha loves hanging out all day with her friends and Adam is a non-stop ball of energy.
Shela says: “Adam and Alesha are true superheroes because they have faced challenges that most people could never imagine, yet they continue to show incredible strength, courage, and resilience every day. Living on dialysis for many years has required bravery, patience, and determination, and they handled it like true superheroes. Despite the difficulties, they still found ways to smile, laugh, and find joy in everything they do. They teach me every day what perseverance, unconditional love, and real courage truly look like, and that’s why they will always be my heroes.”

A previously healthy Lily, who comes from Neath, became critically ill within weeks. After repeated GP visits for a cough, she started swelling around her eyes and feet. Parents, Amy and Ryan, took her to A&E, where tests showed dangerously low protein levels – a sign of kidney issues. She was rushed to HDU then transferred to Noah’s Ark.
But within an hour of arriving on PCCU, while having a cuddling with her dad, Lily turned blue. Ryan says: She said: “Lily really not well’, then took a turn for the worse and went blue. My heart broke into a million pieces, but thanks to the fast response from the nurses and doctors, she’s still here with us today.”
Lily was put on a ventilator to save her life and her parents were told that she would need dialysis and eventually a transplant.
Amy says: “I felt like I was going to lose her. I really thought that she was going to die.”
Days later, Lily moved to Pelican Ward to start dialysis. Her world had changed overnight, — unfamiliar faces, strict diet restrictions, fluid limits, procedures and machines. For a little girl who had no idea why, it was overwhelming.
Lily was terrified of the haemodialisis sessions at first, but play specialist,s Donna and Carys, used toys, paint and slime to gain her trust and help her feel safe.
7 weeks on, Lily now loves her dialysis sessions — seeing them as precious one-to-one time with Donna and Carys. She’s also grown in confident with the wider team.
Donna says: “The opportunities to play haven’t only given Lily the distraction she needed… it made the environment feel familiar, because play is normal for all children. She now feels safe with the hospital team, which is what we wanted to achieve.”
Ryan says: “We can’t thank the doctors, nurses, Donna and Carys and the charity; sparkle team enough. You have all made this life-changing situation bearable!”

First up, Jude, the newest member of the superhero squad.
Jude’s family are heroes themselves, having decided to take part in our Superhero 5k Family Fun Day last year only weeks after losing their beloved son and brother. Jude’s Dudes, a team of both family and friends, went on to raise over £11,000!
When we asked Jude’s mum to describe what made Jude their ultimate superhero inspiration, she said: “Isn’t a hard question because how the heck can you put all of his wonderfulness into words. Jude is the epitome of a hero, he kept and still keeps us going. He was brave and resilient and he faced everything with pure strength and determination. He was never afraid to voice his opinion and we will be eternally proud of him and grateful he is ours. Jude will forever be our hero and we will carry him with us in everything we do.
Jude’s Dudes will be donning their capes and costumes again this year, continuing a legacy of raising funds for other young heroes in celebration of their own.
Emily said: “For us the fundraising helps people see what a difference it makes to families who spend so much time in hospital. The children need Noah’s Ark and what relief it brings them in the hard times. It’s an extra for us to be able to shine a light on Jude and see people come together in his name. His older brother, Sebastian, can feel like he’s running for him and that’s priceless. Jude would have loved to get involved, now we have to run for him.”

Over the last 25 years, supporters like you have made an incalculable difference to the lives of hundreds of thousands of children. When the charity was first founded exactly a quarter of a century ago, the spot where the nation’s children’s hospital now stands was no more than a vacant plot of land. Today it is a center of excellence that provides highly specialised paediatric care to 90,000 children each year.
It’s thanks to people like you that the first phase of that hospital was built in 2005 and, when the doors opened to its second phase in 2015, it was equipped with world class equipment, children’s theatre suites, a radiology department, hydrotherapy pool, playrooms, beds for parents and so much more. Since then, with your help, the charity has continued to make a difference to countless young lives – providing emotional and practical support to families, creating child friendly environments and investing in equipment that helps ensure the best possible outcomes.
This is a thank you to every single person who has supported the Noah’s Ark Charity over the years. It’s also a direct message to the wonderful hospital staff – from just 25 of the thousands of babies, children and young people that you have made a difference to over the last quarter of a century.
Diolch 🌈🎂
