Happy New Year from Niwaki

We’ve been looking back at 2025, and as it turns out, we’ve been rather busy. Here’s a snapshot of some of our favourite highlights:

• January: the winter ritual of ‘momiage’ (pine pruning), a sharpening session with Manos, a visit to No.38 Chiltern Street, and tidying up with the Niwaki Aluminium Rake.

• February: Valentine’s Day, a spot of Ikebana with the Niwaki Black and White Kenzan Set, and the lovely Sarah planting some Kyuri ‘Bon Odori’ seeds (aka Japanese cucumbers)

• March: Spring cleaning in the grassland garden at the Horniman Museum, plus a trip to Japan as part of our collaboration with Paul Smith.

• April: Gearing up for the Chelsea Flower Show with Catherine MacDonald, Baz Grainger and Tom Massey, plus some rather stylish shots of Bon-chan in the new Niwaki Garden Waistcoat.

• May: Niwaki at the Chelsea Flower Show, a collaboration with The Newt, and Je Ann (designer of the Avanade Intelligent Garden) sporting the Niwaki Hori Hori Pro.

• June: The arrival of the Niwaki Engei Set in Green, a visit to our friends at Petalon in Cornwall, and a pop-up at the Hampton Court Flower Show.

• July: Harvesting grapes with the Niwaki Grape Snips, Ikebana workshops at Niwaki HQ, the launch of the Niwaki Bucket Hat, and a sunny summer day with the Daikiba Secateurs.

• August: A pop-up at Snow Peak, Brooklyn, more Ikebana classes, and a first look at the Kurumi Set.

• September: Celebrating Niwaki Chiltern Street’s 4th birthday, driving a flower-filled Kei truck through Paris, publishing Niwaki Field Report No. 2, and a visit to Yeo Valley Organic Garden Festival.

• October: Bulb planting with the Hori Hori Pro, a sample sale at Niwaki HQ, and a warming lemon and ginger brew, courtesy of the Niwaki Grater.

• November: Introducing new products like the Niwaki Dan-Tan, Engei Set in navy twill, the Mini Kantan Bag, the Eley Kishimoto x Niwaki Pouch, and the ever-popular Sentei Set.

• December: Holiday windows at SCP, Niwaki Chiltern Street, and Niwaki HQ, plus an array of festive gift sets.

In the G&T tradition of rooting out hidden horticultural gems for our guests, we are excited that Jake Hobson, founder of Japanese garden tools specialist, has agreed to open his own private garden for G&T next year.

Revealing Jake’s lifelong passion for Japanese topiary, and the precision-made artisanal tools needed to prune the precise shapes, this is a little gem we will visit in June 2026 on our Secret Garden Tour.

On the same day we will also be visiting Niwaki’s nearby HQ, to see the wonderful display of secateurs, hori-horis (the remarkable multi-purpose diggers) and other covetable garden tools they produce in Japan.
