This garden was first conceptualized when designing the house. It is the first thing you see when entering through the front door and its links the living side of the house with the bedroom wing.
The big window frames the garden nicely. The hero tree is a Japanese maple from ‘Chantilly Lace.’ Korean box, ‘Lime lava’, dwarf mondo grass, a Japanese Black pine and in the background, another Japanese maple ‘Inaba Shidare,’ complete the space.
The site is north facing but is shaded from the east, south and west by the house. The house also protects it from wind. A drip irrigation system will keep the plants watered.
I can’t wait to watch it grow.
Known as the dappled willow or flamingo willow, extremely tough, vigorous and grows in full sun to complete shade. Best position is morning sun with afternoon shade so the variegated white leaves don’t get sunburnt.
We mostly graft them as standards to create a colourful ball on a stick shape that is easy to maintain by trimming it once or twice per year. Autumn colour is yellow to orange and in cold areas the stems turn red to orange in winter.
Trim to a round ball or if Left untrimmed it will grow approx 2.5m high x 2.5m wide in 10 years.

Nishiki nursery was founded by Steven Boekel in 2009, the name “Nishiki” – meaning variegated foliage or corky bark, was inspired by Steve’s love for Japanese Maples and his father’s favourite variety, Acer palmatum Orido-Nishiki, a beautiful variegated maple displaying cream and pink variegated leaves in spring.
The foundation for Nishiki Nursery was built on this love of Japanese maples and on plant cultivation knowledge passed down by Steve’s father, tree peony expert Ron Boekel of Paeon Nursery – where Steve’s talent for the delicate art of grafting developed from an early age.
It is this genuine passion, hard work and finely attuned skills that would propel Steve into his nursery career at just nineteen years old, and remains the foundation for Nishiki Nursery today.
Steve remains committed to the development of the employees and the business with his clear vision for the future – continuing to produce the spectacular quality and expansive range of trees and shrubs that Nishiki is known for and continues to supply to the industry.
