For my recent trip to Africa, lent me some gear to try out on safari! I took some of my favourite photos to date with that gear, and got the chance to print a couple of them out this week in their booth in Toronto!

The circle of life isn’t just a story from the savannah—it’s our shared reality. Every choice we make ripples through the natural world. Moments like this remind me of the beauty and innocence that still exist on our planet…and how deeply they deserve our protection.
I think I’ve done a pretty good job at not overusing the Lion King references so far, but this scene felt like it should have been in the movie! This lion’s actual name is Alex and he’s one of the dominant males in this area of the Busanga Plains. 🦁

This is Mohawk, one of the dominant males in the Busanga Plains near Shumba. We found him after he and his pride had a rough night feuding with his nearby rival, Alex.
These two lions occasionally fight for territory, and this time one of Mohawk’s cubs was fatally wounded in the crossfire. To me, his new scars tell a story of grief and loss—but I’m not sure these cats mourn the way we do.
What I do know is that his scars tell a story of survival. Most young male lions never reach adulthood—less than half survive past two, and fewer than one in three take over a pride. Every mark is a reminder of the harsh world they must navigate to claim their place. 🦁

On safari with in Zambia, we were greeted at our final camp by this young lioness! She was very calm—just sat there watching us while we quietly observed her from a safe distance.

Let me start by saying: While experiences like this are rare, they can happen. Always follow your guides’ instructions and maintain a safe distance from wildlife.
Shumba camp is known for its lions—but I didn’t expect this! 🤯
Shumba is only open three months of the year, during the dry season. For the rest of the year, lions have been known to use it as their own home base. The elevated decks give them the perfect vantage point to scan the plains for prey.
On our first night, we decided to skip the sunset game drive and just relax around camp—and are we ever glad we did! Shortly after sunset, this young female hopped up onto the pool deck and stayed there for almost an hour.
We kept our distance and watched quietly from inside as she lounged, completely unbothered by us. What a wild welcome to Shumba! 🦁

If you have seen the Reel I posted a couple days ago, you might recognize this pretty lady! We were lucky enough to see her twice in one day—during sunrise AND sunset. In the bush, and especially with leopards, that is wild luck.
Right before these shots were taken, she was stalking impala, then she decided to hop up on this termite mound to gain a higher perspective. 😍
The sunset, kitty, and these gorgeous purple flowering trees (I’ve forgotten the name, please comment if you know) made for some of my absolute favourite shots of the trip!

Did you guess a leopard? If you did, you’re absolutely right! This young female was the first and only leopard we saw during our trip with 🐆
Leopards will hang out in trees to ambush prey that wanders beneath them. Lucky for the impalas that she was watching, none of them ventured close enough.
Spoiler alert 🚨: this won’t be the last time we see this little lady. Stay tuned…

Meet Petaka and her two cubs. The one in the middle is a male, the other is female. We spent about an hour photographing them from a safe distance while they sat there and watched us right back!
