I first went to, a former pearl fishing village, ten years ago when you could drive yourself around the sandy tracks and wander around the houses. Like many abandoned villages, there are - predictably - rumours that it’s haunted. I’ve never seen a djinn, but that’s not to say they’re not there.
Ten years ago, the buildings were crumbling, and it looked like it would be just a matter of time before they collapsed or were knocked down for yet another luxury resort or residential development. But wonderfully, they’ve been preserved and are now being used as venues for art.
is like a combination of art gallery and urbex. Trails wind through the entire village, and you can peer into most of the unrestored buildings, and even go inside some of them. It’s a brilliant mix, especially with today’s little fluffy clouds as a backdrop, and runs until February 8.
And there are even cut-outs to pose behind, which is definitely a bonus. I’ll always do it, even if I have to ask a complete stranger to take my photo. Like today. You may not be able to spot mine in the carousel, but if you need a hint, look for the pearl fisherman.

But there was a magic to it. Manna in the rain is cosier than cosy. It forced me to slow down, otherwise I’d have been insisting on going to Vytina for saganaki and Dimitsana for a drink and perhaps doing a hike and maybe going to see the monasteries that cling to the cliffs and to the kafeneio where you help yourself to whatever’s in the fridge and leave your money in the box.
Instead, I was happy to sit by the fire, watch the rain, and drink mountain tea with fir honey. And I got to do all of that with the brilliant, the wonderful human being who dreamt up this amazing place and built it out of a century-old abandoned sanatorium that he used to play in as a child.
Time very well spent. But next time it snows in Arcadia, I’ll be tempted to jump on the next plane.

The brilliance of the friends I have here and the new people I meet each visit.
The scruffiness and the beauty, wrapped in a tight embrace. The creativity. The friendliness. The occasional grumpiness. The spontaneous fun and laughter. The sense that this city doesn’t really care what you think of it.
The history, the energy, the sounds of live music that pour out of a taverna as I walk by. The ritual and ceremony. The language that I understand more and more with each visit. The patience of people when I try it out and make multiple mistakes.
The sense of awe when I turn a corner and the Acropolis is right there, towering above me. That feeling that I’m walking in the footsteps of philosophers and warriors, of gods, demigods and mythical creatures in a place that changed the world.
Athens is intoxicating and irresistible. It’s everything a city should be.

2025 was the year that stole Peeps, my steadfast feline companion of 18.5 years, my beautiful friend Thaisa, and my left ovary. Which is, overall, quite heavy on the balance sheet.
But it also brought new friends into my life, and travel to places I’d never been before, like Iraqi Kurdistan, Grenada and Newfoundland. I skied and surfed and wakesurfed. I hiked in Oman and Canada. I snorkelled in the Saudi Red Sea. I cruised down the Nile. I travelled solo, with friends, with my parents, and with my clever, funny and handsome partner
I made multiple return trips to places I love, like Greece, Egypt and Ireland. I went back to my former home of Japan for the first time in many years and realised that in some places, everything changes while at the same time, absolutely nothing changes at all.
I wrote about wonderful people and places, and had more than 120 articles published in over 20 publications, thanks to the incredible editors I have the good fortune to work with and who are, by far, the best in the business.
I also had the opportunity to work on some brilliant projects with some brilliant people. And I put plans in place for much, much more in 2026.
Highs and lows for sure. But that’s what life is all about in the end, isn’t it?
Happy New Year to friends both IRL and virtual. Here’s to the next one. May it be good to all of us.

Thank you for everything we shared. The times we laughed until it hurt. Your strong, stubborn spirit. Your eye rolls that melted into smiles in spite of yourself when and I were being ridiculous about something. Your sense of fun that would come out of nowhere. Your smile that could brighten the most curmudgeonly heart. Your bad moods and good moods and sweetness against all odds. And, above all, your friendship, a beautiful, precious thing that I was in awe of and proud of.
Fly well,. You were tenacious to the very end. You can finally rest now.
🤍🕊️
A few days very well spent, with some very lovely people. You’ll hear what it was all about soon..!🇰🇼

I was never a cat person until Peeps came into my life on a hot day in Hong Kong, a tiny sick kitten abandoned in a cardboard box next to the Mid-Levels escalator, eyes glued shut and motionless. At first I thought he was dead, but when I shook the box he let out a big meow.
As a kitten, he’d sleep on my shoulder and latch onto my earlobe. When he got bigger, he would climb onto the sofa next to me and hug my arm with his legs like a koala hugging a tree, snoring peacefully by my side. He did this forever, and it was the best feeling.
He was a gentle soul, a sweet, small boy with a wonky tail and a love of rubbing his nose on mine. If I was sleeping, he’d hook his teeth into my hair and pull my face to his. Later, when he’d lost his teeth, he’d still try with his gums.
He was a world traveller, moving with me from Hong Kong to Thailand and later to Dubai. He completely lost his hearing a few years back, meaning that he could sleep blissfully undisturbed by vacuum cleaners and doorbells, but I still talked and sang to him because I knew he could feel my voice.
He thought books were only good for scratching or sleeping on. He would steal water from my glass when I wasn’t looking. Sometimes he would sleep face down and I had to check he was breathing. I liked to think we looked alike, with the same white faces, ginger hair, and greenish eyes.
On the rare occasions when he didn’t like something, he’d make a sound like the gates of hell opening. He did this the time he went to the vet in Bangkok to have teeth extracted and made such a fuss that they put a “Very Dangerous Cat” sign on his cage. I was incredibly proud of him that day.
He was inseparable from his brother-from-another-mother Mini, who will miss him as much as I will. He was 18 and a half when he left us this week, an excellent age for such a small boy who now leaves a huge Peeps-shaped hole in my heart.💔
