I just wanted to share my new podcast with you all, if you follow my YouTube channel, this is very much in line with that same history niche.
The first episode is about The Norse Gaels. Each episode will focus on a distinct group of people or society from the ancient and medieval world, mainly focusing on the UK & Ireland for the next few years.
It’s taken me a while to get to this point - six months of researching, writing, many long road trips and ferry rides, filming on location and countless hours editing late into the morning. I’ve also spent a lot of time finding the best available scoring to fit the theme of each chapter.
The full video version will be available on YouTube in a few weeks (I still need to finish the final edit!), but I hope you enjoy this podcast version in the meantime. It is my first upload to Spotify, so hopefully the sound is okay, let me know what you think! 🙂

The Battle of Mons Graupius, fought in 83 AD, was a decisive clash between the Roman army led by General Agricola and the Caledonian tribes under Calgacus. It marked the climax of Agricola’s campaign in northern Britain, where Roman forces had been pushing further into Caledonia for years. As one of the most examined ancient battles in British history, Mons Graupius offers a rare glimpse into Rome’s northernmost ambitions and early Scottish resistance. Although the exact location remains uncertain, a probable site for the battle is thought to be Bennachie in Aberdeenshire, where the dramatic landscape may have witnessed this legendary confrontation. #romans #ancient #historyfacts #scottish #scottishtiktok

The Battle of Tippermuir, fought on 1 September 1644 near the modern village of Tibbermore, marked the first victory in Montrose’s remarkable campaign for Charles I in Scotland. Despite lacking cavalry and artillery, Montrose’s Royalist force—composed largely of Irish and Highland troops—routed the larger but less experienced Covenanter army under Lord Elcho. The Covenanters’ attempt at skirmishing backfired, creating disorder that the Royalists swiftly exploited.
This stunning victory not only secured vital supplies from the defeated army and the city of Perth—without which Montrose might have struggled to continue—but also exposed the Covenanters’ vulnerability. With much of their army campaigning outside Scotland, Montrose’s success underscored the serious threat he posed. After occupying Perth for several days, the Royalists moved north toward Aberdeen.

The Battle of Glen Fruin, fought on 7 February 1603, was a brutal confrontation between Clan MacGregor and Clan Colquhoun near Loch Lomond. Though vastly outnumbered, the MacGregors claimed a decisive and bloody victory, leaving over 140 Colquhoun dead. But the cost was catastrophic. In the aftermath, King James VI issued a royal edict outlawing the entire MacGregor name, stripping the clan of its identity, rights, and protections. From that day, it became a capital crime to call oneself MacGregor. Men, women, and even children were hunted down, some torn apart by dogs, others hanged simply for refusing to deny their lineage. Families were scattered, forced to take false surnames, and driven into the hills to survive. This video explores what happened at the Battle of Glen Fruin, then moves on to uncover how the name MacGregor became a death sentence, and the devastating impact that had on innocent people across the Highlands.

The Battle of Fyvie took place in October 1644 on the grounds east of Fyvie Castle, where the remnants of trenches can still be seen today. James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, found himself engaged in an extended and inconclusive battle against Covenanter forces led by Archibald Campbell, Marquis of Argyll. While not one of the most significant battles of Montrose’s campaign, the fighting around Fyvie lasted over 36 hours and was fierce throughout. Unlike more structured engagements, there was no formal deployment, and the battle developed into a prolonged skirmish.
Casualty numbers remain uncertain, as primary sources provide little concrete evidence. However, it is known that Highlanders under Montrose suffered losses in the initial assault, exceeding those he had incurred at both Tippermuir and Aberdeen. Though Montrose successfully withdrew and lived to fight another day, Argyll’s tactics were well-executed, and he conducted the battle with an uncommon level of determination.

The Battle of Barra was a crucial turning point in Robert the Bruce’s fight for Scotland. It marked the collapse of any coordinated Scottish opposition to his reign, as the Comyns — his most formidable domestic rivals — were decisively crushed. Following the battle and the brutal harrying of Comyn lands in Buchan, their power was shattered, leaving them unable to challenge Bruce any further. With this obstacle removed, Bruce turned his full attention to dismantling English control, launching his relentless ‘scorched earth’ campaign against their garrisons—a strategy that would culminate in the decisive Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
Fought near Inverurie, Barra was part of Bruce’s wider campaign to secure Scotland in the years between his inauguration in 1306 and Bannockburn. With England distracted by internal struggles, Bruce seized the moment to consolidate his rule. His army met John Comyn’s forces in battle, and the fight quickly turned into a rout, with Comyn’s troops either slaughtered or captured as they fled. The victory at Barra not only eliminated a major rival but also set the stage for Bruce’s full-scale war against the English.

In the early hours of 13 February 1692, Scottish government soldiers under the command of Captain Robert Campbell of Glenlyon fell upon their hosts, the Macdonalds of Glencoe. In a cold-blooded breach of highland hospitality, 38 Macdonald men, women and children were killed in what became known as the Massacre of Glencoe.
The Massacre of Glencoe was part of a wider campaign by the Scottish government against the Jacobite clans of the west and was designed to set an example to the recalcitrant chiefs. The Glencoe massacre was botched, partly due to the unwillingness of many of the soldiers under Glenlyon’s command to turn on their hosts and partly due to the weather conditions.
