As you all know, AI scrapes / harvests / steals copyrighted creative work. Personally, I wish that as a matter of principle, all creative people would stand united and refuse to basically steal from other creators just like them. In other words, refuse to use generative AI to create their own work.
This will never happen, of course, but I can dream.
Currently I have a major exhibition running at Museum in Turin of The Day May Break, Chapters One-Four (until September 6). Everything is photographed at the same time in the same frame. But of course, many people jump to the conclusion of compositing, or now worse, f**king AI.
At the exhibition opening, I gave some guided tours, and asked everyone to put up their hand if they would be here if the images were composited or AI. No-one put their hand up. So…there is some hope.
The video here shows the making of a few photos from The Day May Break, a global series featuring first humans and animals, and now just humans, impacted by climate change and environmental destruction.
These videos and photos are from Chapter One, photographed in 2020 in Kenya and Zimbabwe. The other three chapters were photographed in Bolivia, Fiji and Jordan.
The people in the photos have all been badly affected by climate change - some displaced and impoverished by years-long climate change intensified severe droughts and cyclones.
The photographs were taken at sanctuaries/ conservancies. The animals are almost all long-term rescues, due to everything from the poaching of their parents to habitat destruction & poisoning.
These animals can never be released back into the wild. Now habituated to humans, it was safe for strangers to be close to them, photographed together in the same frame.
(For all the countless other ways I find AI a dystopian hellscape, that is for another time).

The highlight of my exhibiting career, 63 large prints across four halls. This is in the room with the daylight photos from Chapter Four, The Echo of Our Voices.
I am deeply honored that the museum are not just exhibiing this work, but also commissioned and partly funded The Echo of Our Voices, the fourth and last chapter of the series. This will be the first institutional exhibtion of this chapter, which will occupy the main hall of the museum. In total, there will be 65 large prints, in four large spaces for each chapter.

From the Foreword to The Echo of Our Voices
The Echo of Our Voices, Chapter Four of The Day May Break, was photographed in the desert of southern Jordan, featuring refugees families, who fled the war in Syria, now living in Jordan.
Living lives of continuous displacement due to climate change, they are forced to move their homes up to several times a year, moving to where there is available agricultural work based on sufficient rainfall.

Now, in this digital era, for me the artist book is more important than ever, not just because it’s a far superior way to view work, but a beautifully produced book has a hand-made physicality that a tiny digital incarnation will never have.
Which leads me, of course, to my new book:
The Echo of Our Voices: The Day May Break: Chapter Four.
Fantastically printed in Italy by, this large book - 12”x15” / 30x38 cm, 70+ photos - includes essays by me, Syrian novelist Samar Yazbek, and curator.

A limited edition print in a folio is available in a signed edition of 50, 10”x13.3” / 25.5x34 cm image on 11.5”x15” / 28.5x37 cm paper.
The photographs feature rural families, who fled the war in Syria, now living in one of the most water-scarce countries in the world, Jordan. In a state of continuous displacement due to climate change, the families are forced to move their homes up to several times a year, moving to where there is agricultural work as a result of sufficient rainfall.

Although they are several meters below the surface, the subjects of Brandt’s mesmerizing photographs do not float or swim. Incredibly, they sit on sofas, stand on chairs, use seesaws, and pose in ways they might on land. The effect is otherworldly, as though the familiar laws of physics have stalled in this strange, liminal zone between land and sea.”

The series was photographed underwater off the coast of the Fijian islands. The local people in these photos are representatives of the many South Pacific Islanders whose homes, land and livelihoods will be lost in the coming decades as the water rises from climate change.
Everything is shot in-camera underwater.
