Rayna and Gene of invited us to New Orleans for their open house, but what they actually did was pour their hearts out for an entire weekend. They opened their greenhouse and their home. They made sure we were fed, had a place to sleep, and experienced the VERY BEST of their city. And they asked for nothing in return. NOTHING.
Even though this was THEIR open house, the way they make their living, they still promoted their friend ‘s plants at the open house. They took us to support another local plant shop They made sure everyone felt included, celebrated, and cared for. Their generosity was not performative…it was quiet, intentional, and constant.
I met them for the first time this year at IAS, yet they treated me like I had been in their lives forever. Some people are kind. Rayna and Gene are the kind of people who make you feel safe, loved, seen, and valued within minutes of meeting them. That kind of person can NOT be faked.
If Southern hospitality had a face, it would be theirs. If more of the plant community led with the same openness and sincerity they do, this space would be transformed.
They grow beautiful anthuriums and have great prices. They work incredibly hard. But what makes them truly special is not just their plants, it’s their hearts. (But if you haven’t checked out their plants yet, you absolutely should).
I hope the love they gave this weekend comes back to them a hundredfold. They deserve every bit of it. 💚
