This is what’s coming to 31st July - 3rd Aug for the first time, from the sand dunes of remote Numbulwar….
We’re delighted to announce that the one and only Ngulmiya will be playing at Garma this year.

Ngulmiya Nundhirribala is a legendary songman and force of nature from Numbulwar. The 2025 NT Australian of the Year, and leader of Yilila and Red Flag Dancers, will perform work from his award winning self-titled album “Ngulmiya” with strings and piano - stunning music that took him and his son Nayurryurr around the world.

The album received a 5-star review from Songlines Magazine UK and won the NIMA’s Album in Language Award. Ngulmiya will be accompanied by pianist Luke Howard and guitarist Francis Diatschenko, with Aaron Wyatt conducting an amazing selection of strings from the Arafura Music Collective, the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Ngulmiya’s singing, stories, dancing and music have left audiences across Asia and Europe in tears, as he shares his family’s history and future through songs that have developed over thousands of years.

Ngulmiya is spearheading a new style of traditional music; the songs he sings are still private ceremony songs, normally sung with didjeridoo accompaniment, but now arranged and performed with global artists - sung like they have never been heard before, or will be again. 🚩🚩

Arafura Music Collective is based in Garrmalang (Darwin) on Gulumoerrgin (Larrakia) land. For nearly 30 years they have contributed to the cultural life of the Northern Territory, performing chamber music from early repertoire to contemporary Australian works.

Renowned for vibrant cross‑cultural collaborations—including Darwin Indian Classical Ensemble, Djari Project, Brooke Green, Darlington String Quartet, Ben Opie, Ensemble Offspring, Ngulmiya, spoken‑word Yolŋu artist Melanie Mununggurr, NT composer Netanela Mizrahi, and most recently Dr Peggy Polias and the Greek community through The Unbroken Thread project—the Collective fosters creativity and community identity through Art Music.

On top of Nipah Mall, Makassar, practising with our Makassan Red Flag dancers, first time we have a dance group outside of Numbulwar.
RETURN TO MAKASSAR - I waited all my life for this, the Jeneberang River, Fort Somba Opu, Makassar, Indonesia, where the dharipa (trepang/sea cucumber) Makassan burrawu/perahu returned from Arnhem Land with my amuri/grandfathers and great grandfathers. The boats returned from Australia, Asia, Arabia, Madagascar and Europe hundreds of years ago. Some of my ancestors stayed here and some returned to Arnhem Land taking languages and my Red Flag songs with them. Thankyou to cultural leader Daeng Sarang and host Abdi Karya. My father’s name “Melayu” is from here, for us it means the Makassan boat crew. The muwaj/names in my songs like Dharrimana, Galurru, Jinggara, Jamajama, Nayurryurr, Manila... are from here. The stories and songs are still alive in our music and touring around the world with Ngulmiya Yilila and Red Flag Dancers.

After this we sat down together and I sung the old Red Flag songs about the Trepangers and Makassan sailing boats.

From the internet “The Jeneberang River is historically significant, as it was utilized by the rulers of the Gowa Dynasty to establish a bustling coastal trading port that attracted Asian, Indonesian, and European spice traders.”
“Dhararri” Live in Barcelona!! Full song on my YT Channel. Some talking about the song at the end. From our “Catalunya” album launch in Barcelona.
Stream or download the album link in bio.

RETURN TO MAKASSAR - this legendary Makassan man Abdi Karya dancing Red Flag on an old Pinisi sailing boat at Losari Beach, Makassar, Indonesia. These are some of the boats my grandfathers and great grandfathers travelled in. Abdi understands the word and actions, most of them are old Makassarese and Bugis words.
Thanks to for filming
RETURN TO MAKASSAR - Fort Somba Opu, in 1669 the Balanda (Dutch) won a war against the Makassans and burned Fort Somba Opu. The Makassans traveled by boat, the boats my Red Flag music and dance is about, to Asia, Madagascar, India and Arnhem Land to live. This is after the Spice Trade ended. You can hear our friend Abdi Karya from Prolog Ecosystem talking about the word for Arnhem Land and its people “Marege”. Now this Fort area is a cultural precinct, with traditional houses from all around Indonesia. This was the place my grandfathers travelled to, this felt like coming home. We are walking to the port where my grandfathers docked over hundreds of years, that’s the next video....

RETURN TO MAKASSAR - first collaboration with traditional Makassan musicians with my Red Flag song Gumiyn Gumiyn.
Maharashtra, India and Arnhem Land, Australia, coming soon….
