Deze maand is John van de Water gast bij Toren van Babel, een maandelijkse serie binnen de Architectenweb Podcast. Hierin spreekt architect Daan Roggeveen (MORE Architecture) met ontwerpers, ontwikkelaars en andere experts die allemaal hun eigen perspectief hebben op hoogbouw. Doel is het antwoord vinden op de vraag: hoe maak je nu een echt goed hoog gebouw?
Aanleiding voor het gesprek is Johns nieuwe boek: “Re-connecting with China – Architecture for Common Ground” (nai010 publishers). Dit gesprek gaat over de start van NEXT architects met een wereldreis langs 26 metropolen, en John’s eerste kennismaking met China. Ze praten over de oprichting van NEXT Beijing in 2004, over de verschillende periodes die John sindsdien heeft meegemaakt in China, en hoe zijn rol als architect daarin veranderd is. Ook de samenwerking tussen NEXT Amsterdam en NEXT Beijing komt aan bod, en hoe het creatieve proces – ideeën-pingpong zoals John het noemt in zijn boek – vorm krijgt.
Natuurlijk gaat het ook over de transformatie en verstedelijking van China sinds de beginjaren 2000 aan bod. Hoe hebben Chinese stadsplanners hoogbouw ingezet in de transformatie van een rurale naar een stedelijke samenleving? Wat kunnen we in Nederland leren van het Chinese stedelijke model, en waar komt de Chinese obsessie met hoogte vandaan?

The ensemble shares a robust material character rooted in the site’s industrial past, while each building has its own identity. designed Coast and Verde with glass, black steel, flexible layouts, and generous outdoor spaces, drawing on the idea of the modern harbor loft.
designed Horn and York with white concrete bases, sculptural corten-steel tops, broad lower apartments facing the IJ, and sheltered loggias higher up.
designed Blanc, with yellow-pigmented concrete, perforated panels, and flared balconies, as well as the circular KAAP pavilion, built with 92% recycled or bio-based materials.
