Below, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about Studio Lists, offering further insight into the project, its objectives, and its broader ambitions.
1) Are studio lists rankings?
Studio Lists are not rankings. We are not interested in defining who is “the best”. Instead, we aim to support a professional culture built on the exchange of knowledge, dialogue, and shared experiences rather than competition.
2) How are studio lists organised?
They are organised alphabetically by location and chronologically by year of foundation.
3) How can a studio be featured?
We continuously research emerging practices through publications, projects, communities, events, and recommendations. If you would like to introduce your work, you can send us a direct message or fill out the form on our website:
4) What are the requirements to be involved?
Studio Lists focuses primarily on emerging practices, generally within the first 10-15 years of their foundation. Beyond experience, we are interested in reflecting a diversity of backgrounds, geographies, scales, working methods, and perspectives, while encouraging balanced gender representation and inclusive professional narratives.
5) What is the purpose of studio lists?
Studio Lists aims to democratise architectural practice by giving visibility to emerging practices, fostering new connections, and opening up new questions, conversations, and forms of exchange that can emerge when this information is made public and accessible.
6) Why are Studio Lists important?
Studio Lists are important today because we believe architecture should be understood as an open and collective discipline. By making this information public, we want to contribute to a culture based less on individual recognition and competition, and more on connection, exchange, and shared knowledge. We see architecture not as a collection of isolated voices, but as a broader movement where different positions and perspectives can find common ground and strengthen the discipline together. In doing so, we believe architecture can occupy a stronger role within society.
#studiolists #newgens #q&a
In the last 12 years, New Gens has involved +10.000 emerging studios from +50 countries in a wide array of cultural activities. “Lists” is an on-going project with the aim of reinforcing our role as connectors between emerging practices, and institutions, collectives, and media.

Interview with Parages
Founded in 2021 and based in Paris and Brittany, parages is an architecture firm led by three partners: Bertrand Étienne Le Personnic, Yannis Fremont Marinopoulos, and Hugo Maffre. The practice is a proud laureate of the 2023 Europe 40 Under 40 award, distinguishing the continent's most promising young architects and designers.
From the very beginning, parages has built a versatile practice, tackling a wide variety of scales and programs. Their portfolio ranges from multi-family housing and public cultural and sports facilities to design and individual homes.
The studio is also deeply committed to a comprehensive low-carbon approach. This commitment translates into innovative construction methods suited to the local context and the extensive use of bio-based materials—including timber frames with straw insulation, and load-bearing solid stone with hemp insulation.

A project by AADA, AFEA, ammi, patrick holzer, undjurekbrüggen
At the centre of the Komturei Werben stands the Verwalterinnenhaus, the most representative and best-preserved building of the courtyard ensemble. Around 1160, the Order of St John settled here, and for over 200 years the Komturei was its most important branch in northeastern Germany. As the first phase of a long-term transformation into an ecological model for rural living and working, the Verwalterinnenhaus was carefully restored. The goal was to preserve the historic fabric and embodied energy, strengthen the ensemble’s character and introduce contemporary uses without altering its evolved appearance. The original load-bearing structure was restored and reinforced based on research and archival studies. The smaller, older basement was uncovered and converted into a public sauna and relaxation area. The 19th-century layout above was preserved. Garden-level walls were insulated with hemp-lime and finished in lime plaster. Floors are cement-free, diffusion-open lime screed on foam glass with integrated thermal activation. Upper floors were insulated with wood fibre and clay plaster; ceilings were renewed with reed mats and fitted with ceiling heating. Bathrooms and an escape staircase were added as clearly defined, reversible timber insertions. Historic windows were refurbished and upgraded with internal box frames. Roof truss, timber framing and beams were preserved; clay infill, roof tiles and bricks were reused. Dormers, balconies and a photovoltaic canopy appear as abstract contemporary layers. Around 70 tons of clay enhance thermal mass and indoor climate. Energy is supplied by a heat pump and photovoltaics; rainwater and greywater systems serve toilets and the garden. Rebuilt brick pinnacles integrate nesting spaces for birds and bats. Two field maples will gradually replace temporary balcony supports, becoming living structural elements.

Interview with Réseaux
Réseaux addresses the subjects of landscape and urban planning jointly, striving to rediscover the connections that define places. At a critical moment in the evolution of how we inhabit our territories, our commitment is to networking rather than opposing models; to the link between what exists and what will exist; to the relationship with resources, with visible and invisible living beings; to the interdependence of environments and the interweaving of scales and disciplines.

A project by Keßler Plescher Architekten BDA
On the edge of a seaside resort on the island of Usedom, a few holiday homes are scattered in the dune forest within walking distance of the beach. One of these houses was self-built in the 1960s by two families. Its unique character was evident in the layout: a semi-detached house in the guise of a single-family home was built on a 40 m² footprint. The two units shared an internal staircase, each with a living room on the ground floor and a bedroom in the attic, complemented by a separate toilet house in the garden.
Sixty years and a full division of the property later, the remaining half of the house had 18 m² and no staircase. The design task thus defined itself: With the aim of taking up as little space as possible, the design envisages a layout that, with the exception of tables and chairs, does not require any loose furniture: in a room-wide piece of furniture on the dividing wall of the building, the kitchen slides under the stairs, while a large platform in the corner of the room offers space to linger. Opposite, the large window in the gable façade is being replaced and installed as a bay window. The reduced parapet height allows it to be used as a bench, also an additional bed can be set up here if required. The attic has a large bed and cabinet.
The floor features a small-scale pattern of light-coloured square tiles with very wide joints, reminiscent of a textile weave. Blue tiles in front of the window acts as an off-centre focal point, recalling a carpet. This blue recurs in the new window and door sashes, while lighter frames give the windows a delicate appearance. The kitchen furniture is coated with a light blue glaze. The façade remains largely ‘as found,’ with untreated roughcast plaster supplemented as needed.

Interview with FMAU
FMAU is an architecture and urban planning office based in La Rochelle, working on projects ranging from territorial strategies to individual houses. FMAU operates with a mindset of continuity, bridging the gap between high and popular culture. Its work focuses on creating “geographical rooms”—projects that emerge from the specific conditions of their environment. Geology provides the building materials and construction techniques, climate shapes design, proportions, and the relationship to ground and sky, while everyday life defines the spaces of both the mundane and the extraordinary. Each room develops its own geometry while contributing to a coherent, site-specific whole."
