Shipping facts:

- Shipping is responsible for 3.5% - 4% of all climate change emissions.

- In January 2023, the world’s merchant fleet consisted of 105 500 vessels, of which 56 500 ships were over 1000 gross tons.

- They release 1 billion tons of CO2 each year and rising.

- Cargo ship Emma of Maersk burns 16 tons of fuel per hour.

- 15 of the largest ships pollute as much nitrogen and sulphur oxide as all the cars in the world.

Beyond fossil fuel emissions, shipping has other detrimental impacts on the environment:
-
COLLISIONS with vessels can affect all species of whales and often go unnoticed and unreported.
-
SOUND POLLUTION from shipping travels long distances interfering with many marine species’ abilities to communicate, feed, and locate themselves.
-
BALLAST WATER discharged between foreign ports contains non-native matter that can cause extensive damage to local aquatic ecosystems.
-
OIL SPILLS are considered a major ecological threat due to the large amount of oil spilled per accident and the fact that major sea traffic routes are close to Large Marine Ecosystems.
-
SHIPPING ACCIDENTS, even in the age of precision navigation, often occur at sea. As the size of ships increases so does the scale of the impact on the environment should the ship fall into disaster.

This is exacerbated by the growing fleet of shadow tankers that transport sanctioned oil with little regard for industry regulations.
-
SHIP BREAKING in 2013 - 1,213 ships were broken down, containing tens of thousands of tons of hazardous waste materials. It is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. At Alang, in India, 40,000 migrant workers tear apart, literally by hand, half of the world’s discarded ships.

Not only are we blind to this gigantic maritime industry (cargo shipping), but also to the environment that supports it.
-
Covering 70% of the planet’s surface, the ocean is the lifeblood of Earth, driving weather, regulating temperature, and ultimately supporting all living organisms.
-
Yet for all our reliance on the ocean, 95% of this realm remains unexplored. We know more about the surface of the Moon and Mars, than the ocean floor.
-
The lack of knowledge is not standing in the way of “progress.”
-
Long considered the traditional domain of shipping, fishing, and (since the 1960s) offshore oil and gas, the maritime industry landscape is undergoing a profound transition.
-
New industries include offshore wind, tidal and wave energy; oil and gas exploration and production in ultra-deep water and exceptionally harsh environments; offshore mariculture; seabed mining; deep sea water harvesting; OTEC power; marine tourism; and marine biotechnology.
-
These industries may be of great benefit but they are operating largely unregulated, in a barely managed ocean space.
-
It is time for us to reconnect with our ocean, our commons, and demand transparency and ethical management of this global seascape, above and below the water, for the benefit of both people and the planet.
-
A good place to start is at home - for eventually, all things return to the sea.
-
Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, ReTHINK.

90% of everything we own and use, has at some point, spent time as cargo in a container ship, traveling through a vast network of ocean routes and ports that most of us know almost nothing about. Our economy relies on international trade, and international trade relies on ships.
-
Those items have also passed through the hands of many others, extracted from land and sea, shaped into a form ready for consumption, then packaged, delivered, bought, used, and discarded. These intricate supply chains of stuff, connect us to the livelihoods of others and environments across the planet, more intimately than ever before.
-
“On ship-tracking websites, the waters are black with dots. Each dot is a ship; each ship is laden with boxes; each box is laden with goods. In postindustrial economies, we no longer produce but buy. We buy, so we must ship. Without shipping there would be no clothes, food, paper, or fuel. Without all those dots, the world would not work.” - Rose George

Our panela, olive oil and coffee… looking good, tasting even better! Why?
-
PANELA: unrefined cane sugar from Colombia. Traditionally made for centuries by dehydrating raw sugarcane juice over low heat. This simple manufacturing process means the panela retains all the flavourful and nutrient rich molasses from sugarcane. Our organic certified panela comes from an indigenous association of Arhuaco people who have been stewards of the Sierra Nevada mountains and beyond for millennia.
-
EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL: imported from award winning small-scale producer - this is a single estate organic certified oil made with indigenous olive varieties, pressed within 3 hours of harvesting. Unblended, unfiltered and cold-pressed.
-
COFFEE - we have both coffee and decaf beans imported from Colombia. Both speciality grade beans from small-scale coffee growers who give the best care and attention to the land. The decaf is made using the sugar-cane process, which uses a natural byproduct from industrial sugarcane refining to extract the caffeine. The process takes place in Colombia, saving on shipping miles compared with many decaf coffees that first travel to decaffeinating plants in Mexico, Canada and Germany.
-
Excellent provenance = exceptional taste (and the only panela, olive oil and coffee to be shipped thousands of miles with the clean power of the wind)
-

Probably the UK’s cleanest olive oil, coffee and sugar (panela), shipped in with the wind, and delivered to your door.

Well that was the dream delivery! Eigg beer delivered to The Old Forge in Knoydart under sail.

Thanks to and for inviting us into an amazing journey. Courtesy of and their amazing captain and crew, we defied weather and big seas to deliver our newest brew to the mainland UK’s most remote pub. Sometimes it’s amazing to be beside the seaside…

Last minute opportunity to join the Grayhound Lugger in Scotland this week for a mini cargo run, sailing ale from the to.

Join the ship in Oban on the 16th (Friday) and disembarking in Mallaig on the 20th (Tuesday).

A wonderful opportunity to sail with a beautiful ship and crew, helping us to document these small but historic moments and share them with the world.

We recently loaded sacks of green coffee onto the ship, the Grayhound Lugger.
-
Ship and crew set sail for Dublin to deliver this Colombian coffee on its final leg to where it is now being roasted, ground, soaked and poured for the enjoyment of their local coffee drinkers.
-
This is the completion of a long long voyage which started on remote farms in Colombia, a road trip to the port of Santa Marta, and then a sailing trip of over 4,000 nautical miles to Cornwall - using the power of the wind.
-
It always throws into perspective for me, what incredible feats are taken for granted so we can enjoy a simple morning coffee… and I’m not talking about our sailing cargo ships. The scale of the global economy, and shipping industry that supports it, blows my mind! But it is contributing to its own destruction by using fossil fuels.
-
A return to human scale technology that cares for the land and for people, might allow us this small pleasure for a longer time to come, whilst also bringing us closer together as a global community.
-
See more lovely photos of the day on our website.

When it is cloudy outside, why not taste the sunshine. Quite literally the key ingredient for growing our panela, coffee and olive oil. 💙

#newdawntraders #sailcargo
On Friday we loaded just under 4 tons of coffee onto the Grayhound Lugger when they called into Falmouth en route to Ireland.
-
The coffee has made a long long journey from small family farms in a Colombia, and shipped across the Atlantic Ocean by wind power with sailing vessel Ide Min.
-
Now the coffee is onboard its wind-powered connection to Dublin, destined for roasting with 💙🙌
-
On board is also a small amount of olive oil and panela for on the Isle of Arran… slowly we’re building a sail cargo route across the Irish Sea!
