Just a short walk from Manors metro and Northumbria uni main campus.
Over the course of my career I had to leave a couple of gyms, and it was one of the most painful things I have had to do in my life. Likewise, I have lost many students the same way. Most of the time it was a simple case, not of a desire to leave, but rather the need to. A visa expired, a job in another city, the imminent arrival of offspring….but there are occasions where an athletes current team doesn’t meet their technical needs with coaching and training partners, or opportunities, and the athlete has outgrown the environment.
To my shame, when I was younger and didn’t understand, I just slinked off. ‘Ghosted’ them, I believe the kids say. When I was a man I went to see my coach, said Thankyou for everything you have done for me Boss, but my life has changed and I need to move on. Anything I achieved, or learned after, I would always acknowledge that I could only accomplish those feats because of the schooling I had received earlier, and been proud to say where and from whom I had been trained. I’ve been on the other end too, and whenever anyone has been a man about it and said to my face: “Thankyou, but our time is over.” we have shook hands and continued to be friends and supporters of one another.
There is a third way this goes down though: where an athlete, unable to admit their desire to go elsewhere because it will benefit them, seeks to create a narrative of shortcomings and failures and faults on the part of the coach or academy, in order to excuse and deflect from their Creontage.The tragedy is that it serves nobody well, and only leaves sour tastes in all mouths and fractures in all hearts. Just be a man, shake their hand, and say: Thankyou for everything.
Every single fight was a banger, with so much skill and grit on display. I commentated on the preliminaries, and was blown away by all of the performances. When I was first invited to be part of the Victory production, I made a list of what exactly the commentary role actually is. What I boiled it down to was: the job is to help the viewer at home enjoy the fights, and give them as much of the feeling of being there live and in person as possible. Sometimes that’s explaining the action in terms of the rules and the skill being employed and explaining what’s happening. Sometimes that’s enthusing about the action and passing on that feeling of danger and anticipation one gets from seeing it unfold live. The last part is that you leave behind a document of the event, that might be one of the greatest, or at least most significant moments in a person’s life.
I recall way back in my 20’s I got a big break to fight in Los Angeles, with Bruce Buffer as the announcer, the whole Shebang. One of the broadcasters made a joke at the expense of the appearance of one of the fighters. Promoter and matchmaker Eddy Millis (of K-1 Vegas, Pancrase, Strikeforce fame)ragged the poor fool out of the commentary booth. “These guys are f***ing superheroes! These guys are demi-Gods compared to you! Don’t ever, ever disrespect them!”
The inadequate commentator disappeared, presumably to change his underwear. (Eddy is kinda scary even when he’s being nice. I imagine he’s f***ing terrifying when you’ve pissed him off 🤣)
That always stuck in my mind, and I always tried to make sure that I gave an accurate account of the action, whilst understanding that everyone in there has pinned their hopes and dreams on that moment and dedicated hours, weeks, months and years to the pursuit of excellence. I’ve not always gotten it exactly right, and sometimes offered criticism when I meant for critique. I would like everyone who’s bouts I’ve had the privilege to commentate to know: I admire and respect all the courage and skill you showed; officials included, who are often the unsung hero.
