Six years ago, HVS engaged NBW to undertake a 98-acre master plan, guiding the transformation of a former golf course into an immersive arts campus with reinvigorated ecological systems. Today, we are thrilled to see the new Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center open to the public. With architecture by Studio Gang, the campus welcomes visitors to explore the Hudson Valley landscape as part of the theater experience.
Acting on HVS’s vision to integrate art and nature, the NBW landscape design includes a poetic arrival experience. Accessible paths wind through native meadows toward the theater, picnic lawns, and sweeping views of the Hudson Highlands. With 14 acres of biodiverse plantings and site-wide sustainability strategies, the project represents a convergence of landscape restoration with cultural placemaking.

Grounded in rigorous historical research, ecological analysis, and operational planning, this comprehensive framework will guide long-term stewardship, preservation, sustainability, and visitor experience across one of the most significant 18th-century landscapes in the United States. Washington’s deep engagement with agriculture, design, and land stewardship makes this project uniquely meaningful to our team.
We are joined by an interdisciplinary team of project partners including Beyer Blinder Belle, Nitsch Engineering, Linnaea Tillett Lighting Design Associates, and ETM Associates to steward 250-year-old trees, agricultural fields, viewsheds, circulation networks, soils, drainage systems, and visitor infrastructure—-while strengthening ecological resilience for generations to come.
As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, this work will help reveal Mount Vernon not only as a historic home, but as a living, working landscape shaped by experimentation, innovation, and care.
We look forward to contributing to the thoughtful evolution of this extraordinary American landscape.

As the Garden Club of Virginia’s on-call landscape architect, NBW supports the stewardship of more than 40 historic, publicly accessible gardens across the Commonwealth. This partnership includes mentoring the GCV Historic Landscape Research Fellow, who conducts in-depth study of a selected Virginia site each year. For the 2026 fellowship, the focus is the Colonial-era estate of Battersea in Petersburg, Virginia. The fellow will research and document the historic landscape and develop a conjectural reconstruction of the eighteenth-century formal garden under the guidance of NBW’s cultural landscape historians and designers and the Garden Club of Virginia’s Restoration and Fellowship Committees.
Fellows receive a stipend, housing near the site, and the chance to contribute to published scholarship that expands the record of Virginia’s culturally significant landscapes.

Following The Resilient Campus competition, we spoke with UB School of Architecture and Planning Dean Julia Czerniak, who oversaw the initiative, about the contest’s origin, ideas that were uncovered, and what a resilient built environment means in the 21st century.
"Sustainability asks how we live in a way that does not deplete our resources, whereas resilience refers to how a system withstands, adapts to, or recovers from disturbances," Czerniak told us. "How do we as designers work differently? What tools should we use? How do we do it? Those are not easy questions."

Field Studies: Growing a Biogenic Campus, envisions a regenerative South Campus for the University at Buffalo (UB) that evolves to meet human and bioregional needs over the next half century and beyond. In response to climate extremes, the proposal reframes the campus as a vital system—one that grows its architecture through the cultivation of plant-based building materials to reduce embodied and operational carbon while sustaining healthful learning environments. Agroecological gardens function as living laboratories, while oak savanna and forest landscapes integrate with geothermal infrastructure to advance biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and energy production. A University-Assisted Community School, Health Sciences Complex, and intergenerational housing employ nested thermal zones under snow-catching timber roofscapes, bridging the University and city through spaces for care, learning, and collective gathering. This campus vision articulates a radical reciprocity between humans and ecologies towards a more regenerative future.

Designed by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects with architecture by Farshid Moussavi Architects, the 11-acre campus reinterprets Islamic Garden traditions through the lens of Texas’s diverse ecologies. A sequence of 10 acres of courtyards and terraced gardens with fountains and native planting creates a contemplative oasis at the edge of Buffalo Bayou, inviting visitors of all backgrounds to gather, reflect, and connect.
NBW’s landscape design grounds the Center in the region’s living systems — weaving ecological resilience, flood adaptation, and biodiversity into a setting of enduring beauty. Terraced gardens reference historic Islamic geometries while embracing the native character of the Gulf Coast prairie, savanna woodlands, and upland meadows. Together, architecture and landscape form a dialogue between culture and nature, tradition and innovation, Houston and the world.
