I have been sitting on this post for months now. It never felt 100% complete and as time passed, I wasn’t even sure anymore if I wanted to talk about a place that already gets a lot of tourism.
But what I do want to do on this page is talk about things and places I truly love, and Kamakura is one of them. Within Japan, it’s the place I keep returning to time and time again, and as soon as I see the ocean in the distance, I suddenly feel at peace and all the noise in my head just goes quiet. The pace here is so much slower than Tokyo, and while I love the city, a friend of mine recently made me realise that maybe the one thing I am missing in Tokyo is the ability to look far into the distance. Here in Kamakura, you can let your eyes wander, and something about that feels so healing.
This is not a guide. It’s a collection of places I return to whenever I visit, and that I like to share with my friends. I hope you enjoy them too 🌊
First Lotus Blossoms [July 12 - 16]
Paris is a whole different beast from my hometown. I get off the train with my suitcase and it feels like a thousand hairdryers are blowing into my face. It’s still 34C at 8pm. I am suffering, but at least I am finally seeing Chris again after a month apart. And my friend Lili. Together, we brave the heat everyday, enjoying our time in this special city. The nights are tough though. Overall I am realizing how hard it is to escape the heat in Europe, with barely any air conditioned building around. The only thing getting me through it all are the daily bubble teas from my favourite tea store.
We stayed at Earthboat Karuizawa, a true santuary deep in the forest, with cabins surrounding a calm pond. Our cabin came with a wood-burning sauna and our own private open-air bath fed directly by the nearby Asama Yumoto Onsen. My favourite part was the large window directly looking out onto the pond and into the green. I could have spent my entire time there just looking out into nature from this cozy spot.
We had brought some food for dinner with us, but had totally forgotten to bring anything to drink. Luckily, there is a small self-serve store on the grounds where you can purchase drinks ingredients for a BBQ.
