Visiting Meigetsu In - which is also nicknamed Ajisai-dera (Hydrangea Temple) for obvious reasons - in Kamakura during this season has long been on my bucket list and I am so glad I finally went despite the gloomy weather ☔️
It’s getting warmer here in Tokyo and I have been craving fresh salads with lots of fruit and vegetables. Zaku Knives’ kind invite to visit their store and choose a knife came just in time as we have been wanting to get a good quality vegetable knife for our salad.
The store is in Kappabashi Street, also known as Tokyo’s Kitchen Town, and you can spot its bright yellow front and interior from far away!
The shop displays over 1500 beautiful, high quality knives ranging from beginner-friendly to professional-grade tools. As someone who doesn’t know a lot about knives, the experience was great as the store provides a beginner guide pamphlet and the knowledgeable staff members can answer any questions you may have.
Really happy with our new Nakiri (vegetable knife)!

Silkworms Start Feasting on Mulberry Leaves [May 21 - 25]
These last few days went by somewhat quickly and uneventful. Writing this makes me realise that for the past months, I have always been up to something with very little periods of stillness in between. I went to my favourite bakery with a friend. I went to a café to do some work. On the way there, I crossed Inokashira Park and left it with my first mosquito bites of the year. It has stopped cooling down in the evenings and I stopped bringing a cardigan with me even when I am out late at night.
On my last trip to Kyoto, I visited Komyo-in for the first time. I knew that the infamous sakura display would be long gone but as my accommodation was nearby, I decided to go anyway and I am so glad I did.
My visit coincided with a solo exhibition by titled ‘Uzo Mujo’. The temple grounds were filled with abstract prints of all different sizes which somehow harmonized perfectly with the atmosphere and interior of the temple. I first thought they might be prints created using tree trunks due to their circular shape, but upon looking closer, I realised that they were created by dipping toilet paper rolls into black ink and stamping them onto paper. Never had I thought I would encounter toilet paper art in a temple, but I guess this is exactly what I love about Kyoto so much: The mutual appreciation and respect for both tradition and modernity 🧻
There is a version of Tokyo that everyone is always taking about. That version is fast, loud, crowded, full of neon signs and colourful anime figurines and skyscrapers and tech. It’s a version that I found fascinating at first but that quickly became over helming and overstimulatin And most importantly, it ond represents a very tiny fraction of the whole picture. After two years of living here, I am still only scraping the surface, but I have discovered a much calmer, surprisingly green and no less vibrant side of this city. In this series, I’I like to share this side with you!
Bamboo Shoots Sprout [May 15 - 19]
It’s my first time trying frozen sweet potato from the vendor in our neighbourhood who only opens about two times a month. It feels like the perfect treat for an early summer day. The following day, I am going on a long journey to a coastal town called Akashi, a little south of Kobe to visit the house of an architect by the ocean. The sky is a perfect blue and the other visitors and I enjoy the calm music and views from the big window upstairs. In the evening, I leave for Kyoto. I am excited because I have only ever been to Kyoto in autumn. The temperatures reach 33C on my first day exploring, a little lot for my liking but at least it’s not humid yet. Hydrangeas are starting to blossom everywhere and people gather along Kamo river to enjoy the warm evenings.
A few days ago on a warm and sunny day, I hopped on a train in Tokyo and about 5 hours later I landed in Akashi, a calm coastal town on Japan’s Seto Inland Sea.
I frankly had never heard of this town before but had seen the beautiful ocean framed by an open window and accompanied by the sounds of a wind chime through the eyes of countless times. Over the past year or so I had been dreaming to see this view with my own eyes and when I read that Akio-san was going to open the house to the public for one day, I knew I had to go.
I ‘heard’ the house before I could see it - soft, ambient sounds by and were accompanied by the wind chime I had seen many times before. The scent or curry greeted me at the door (which was delicious!) and after spending some time exploring the home and learning about it’s creation, I enjoyed the rest of my time sitting by the window, listening a mix of music, faint chatter, the ocean and the wind chime. A lot of visitors stayed until sunset, slowly watching the light transform.
Thank you again for opening the doors to your wonderful home! ありがと~
Only a few minutes away from crowded attractions like Kiyomizu-dera, in a quiet street off the main road, you’ll find the residence of potter and key figure of the Mingei movement, Kawai Kanjiro. If you - like me - are an avid fan of architecture, crafts and design, this might just become your favorite museum in all of Kyoto.
The house is left exactly as it was when Kanjiro lived there with his family, and security ropes are almost missing entirely as visitors are encouraged to explore the place as a whole and develop a feeling for how it was to live here. The house was designed by Kanjiro himself, and he also crafted most of the furniture and beautiful artworks you encounter throughout the home.
The home is built around a massive climbing kiln he shared with 20 families in the neighbourhood. You can walk through the chambers filled with long forgotten ceramic pieces.
Don’t forget to follow the soft ‘meow’ echoing through the building and with a bit of luck, you will find resident cat Eki-chan (last slide) 🐈
I woke up this morning to 15 thousand of you!
Thank you so much for being here, for your kind words and curious questions. I thought it would be time to properly introduce myself so here are a few things about me 🌱
