With the black grouse season about to come to a close for me (one more morning to go) I thought I would share a few images from this season with you. I have just put 2027 dates up on my website and places are already being booked up. So if you fancy a visit next year have a look. Link is in comments below. Let me know in the comments if you have a favourite from this group of pics.
Crested tit season in full swing now and with the autumn colours still showing nicely, it was time to take advantage of these fantastic conditions and combine these two wonderful subjects together with some late afternoon light. Result as hoped was a very vibrant colourful scene. If you fancy a go with these great little birds just get in touch, bookings available through till end of February. #crestedtit #autumn #autumncolours #birds #nature
I'm back from my red deer autumn rut trips and I'm thrilled to share some of my best shots. Let me know in the comments which is your favourite. The trips were a great success, with changeable weather conditions providing a nice variety of photographic opportunities. Some fantastic evening light allowed for some stunning backlit shots. A personal highlight was capturing an intense stag fight, featured in the B&W image. If you're interested in joining me on a trip next year, I'll be announcing the dates on my website soon. #reddeer #deer #rut #autumn #nature_perfection
Not long returned from a couple of back to back tours with folks on the west coast. One of our principle subjects was red deer in summer. On a couple of occasions we were blessed with some evening light allowing some opportunities to try some backlight shots and with the stags looking amazing with their velvet antlers they were very much the focus of attention given how the velvety antlers really glow in such lighting. This particular stag posed nicely against a darker background which really allowed the antlers to pop.
Hinds and their very young calf’s were also a main focus, a couple of these will follow soon. #reddeer #reddeerstag #reddeerphotographer #backlit #nature
Last weekend seen the last morning in the hide for the black grouse lekking season. 21 mornings in all spend in the hide over April, I miss these fantastic birds but certainly not the 3.30am alarms 😃.
It was a great month and I can’t recall a better spell of April weather, all but two mornings had good conditions and the lucky folks who visited over the first couple of weeks had light and frost as seen in the above image (disclaimer, this can’t be guaranteed again next season!!) but 🤞🏻🤞🏻 for at least some mornings like it again.
I am currently selecting dozens & dozens of new images for completely new galleries on my website, all my recent black grouse images from this season will be one of the galleries. I will be posting about these when they go up on the website over the next couple of months. Also a heads up, dates for next years black grouse lekking mornings will be going up on my website early June so watch out for these if you are interested for next spring. #blackgrouse #blackgrouselek #blackgrouselekking #birds #birdsofinstagram

I was really chuffed to receive an email last night telling me that two of my images had been Highly Commended in the BWPA. It’s always a really nice satisfying rewarding feeling being recognised in this prestigious competition 🤗. With both images featuring red deer made it even better. The “ Stag Shaking of Rain” was awarded in the Animal Behaviour category and the “Mountain Silhouettes” in the Habitat category. Sincere congratulations to all the winners, runner ups, highly commended and the many others who will feature in the annual book.
If any one is looking for a nice summer trip I have 1 place remaining on my ' Wild Summer in the Northwest Highlands' trip. I have put the link for this trip in the comments below so you can get the full information there. One aspect of this trip is the focus on summer red deer and offers unique opportunities to photograph red deer calves (like the ones in pictures) plus the stags in their full velvet antlers and splendid red coats. It's not only deer though, we will also visit a wonderful location to photograph some curious seals. On other outings we will take in some landscape photography as well as looking for some ptarmigan at one of the viewpoints we will visit. This is a full board trip in a wonderful location, all you need to do is get there 😀. The images showed here were all taken on similar previous trips. Please feel free to get I'm touch via messenger here or via my email that you will find on the link in comments below.
A Happy New Year to everyone and I hope 2025 will be a good one for you all 🙏🏻.
With the recent snow in some areas I felt it apt to post this image from ‘ Chasing The Deer’. It was a full on blizzard this day and difficult to take pictures in with cameras focus completely redundant with so much falling snow to focus through. However it did allow for some fantastic atmosphere in the resulting images. #reddeer #deer #snow #winter #blizzard
I have just returned from a private trip with a couple of friends/clients that have done countless trips with me over the years. This was a precursor to a new trip I will be offering next autumn. It’s called “ Wild Highland Autumn Red Deer Rut”. A fantastic trip it was with these brilliant animals 🦌. Full details for next years tours are now up on my website, see the link in comments below. All the images you will see on that trips banner were taken over last weeks trip. This is the story behind one of the encounters/images we got last week.
Wonderful evening light was fading fast and I was willing 🙏🏻 this dominant stag to get in the right position for us. I could see the potential for something a bit special but this stag would just not cooperate, finally with little more than 10mins before the sun would set behind the distant hill he presented himself in a near perfect position. He stared menacingly and looked superb all backlit, it was an impressive looking scene through the viewfinder, I took some images but I knew if he roared the backlit breath would look stunning. Indeed this is a bucket list picture that has always eluded me. After what seemed like an eternity he roared and for sure that illuminated breath looked better than I could have imagined. He roared again but this time his head was turned away, no matter the first roar was enough. An anxious quick image check through the viewfinder confirmed the moment of truth had been captured. How rewarding it is to finally be in correct position and get all the elements coming together and achieve an image that I envisaged for years. #reddeer #reddeerstag #reddeerrut #autumn #roaringstag
It’s been several years since visited this gannet colony, pre covid and avian flu in fact. Although fewer birds than pre avian flu it was still great to see a healthy number of birds on the cliffs and many many young gannets at varied stages of size.
Photography wise it’s the best light I have ever had at this location and the late evening sun offered up some nice warm backlighting. For this portrait image I used the dark shaded cliffs in the background to make this wonderful looking bird stand out more.
