I don’t really make Eurorack cabinets anymore, aside from a few custom builds, but I still love seeing them out in the wild.
sent this over the other day and it didn’t fully register at first. I mostly live in The Dead, great bassists, and early 60s bebop. But apparently the kids are very into A new hire I brought on saw it and lost his mind, so I guess that confirms it.
He’s mainstage Coachella this year.
I’ll take a brief moment of feeling cool, then get back to making quiet, beautiful things out of wood and listening to Johnny Cash.

I got a box today from … and inside was one of the nicest leather shop aprons I’ve ever seen.

It’s kind of hard to explain how well made this thing is.
I’ve been wearing the same Artifact Bags apron for over a decade. It’s… seen some things. Probably more blood than recommended.

But the top row of tool holders were loose, so every time I’d bend over, everything would fall out. And the front pockets were wide open, so they’d just fill up with sawdust… straight into my iPhone’s charging port. My poor phone never stood a chance.

This one fixes all of that. Thoughtful pockets, better layout, everything actually stays where it’s supposed to.

It did, unfortunately, miss its first opportunity to get soaked in blood and take a field trip to the ER this weekend… but I’m excited to start breaking it in today. Preferably without the trauma.

Only downside… apparently it doesn’t make my skinny butt look thicc’r.

Sigh.

Cutting a 35° angled mortise for a bridle joint on an edge that sits 100° off my back reference.
The goal was to have the mortise itself register 90° to that back edge, so I could cut a clean 35° tenon on the leg frame without fighting the geometry.
Rather than overthink it, I built a pretty ugly router platform jig to force everything into alignment. It worked beautifully. Aside from a tiny fleck of blowout on the show side, which will sand out, the cut was dead clean.
This is for an angled stretcher in the cantilever base. The tenon will pass through the claro walnut top at an angle and leave a bit exposed.
Floating cabinet and other good stuff coming next. Feels like everything is finally starting to come to life this weekend.
Also, I’m officially breaking in my t-shirt. Hi Alec!!!
Continuing the slab-flattening love fest, I picked up a monstrous 3 1/4” surfacing bit for the router sled. Not going to lie, I was a bit (pun intended) terrified there wouldn’t be enough shank to hold this helicopter blade securely since I had to extend it past the router base opening, which is much smaller than the bit. Justin politely asked me to test it before he used it on this slab, which was fair.
It worked a treat and saved us a significant amount of time.

A remarkable hat trick for composer Ludwig Göransson.
Three Academy Awards for Best Original Score across three very different films: Black Panther, Oppenheimer, and now Sinners. An extraordinary run and a huge contribution to modern film music.
Some years back I built a massive Eurorack cabinet for Ludwig’s studio during an earlier chapter of my shop when I was designing modular systems like this.
I don’t make these anymore, but it felt like a fitting moment to pull this one from the archives. Congratulations on the achievement.

I was about to 💤😴💤but I was tagged with a bleepy bloopy. rules so here’s the bleepy reposted.

Building a 16’ slab-flattening setup today.
Spent most of the day building giant torsion boxes from 5×10 Baltic birch, skinned with melamine, to create a fully modular flattening platform here in the shop.
I had to take advantage of my unusually long wing span to reach both sides of the slab… that’s quite a stretch.
With two sets of 6’ rails and another 4’ set on the way, we’ll be able to flatten 16’ Claro walnut slabs without breaking a sweat.
The Woodpeckers system is fantastic. Once you understand the setup, it’s an absolute weapon.

The base 5×10 handles most slabs. When something bigger rolls in, we roll up the extensions and bring everything coplanar with hydraulic lift carts.
Crew is on slab duty while I get back to the cabinet commissions and other shop stuffs.

Remembering a little dude learning Detroit on bass and missing him lots.

The Lani Lobes production model is ready.
People ask what makes Claro walnut so special and I truly can’t overstate its magical properties.
It pours champagne like a dream.
As for the other vice Sinatra sings about… the wood has its limits.

The fifth and final incarnation of our Lani Lobes turntable credenza from solid walnut, fumed white oak, wenge, and a whole lotta love. This one is outfitted for booze and albums.

I finally got the lights dialed in on the final version of the Lani Lobes credenza we’ll be making. It’s been a year of trial and error, mostly error. The first version was a prototype, but it was also a special piece on a number of levels. Over the past year I’ve been slowly iterating on that original build, trying to bring the lighting closer to the effect I had imagined when I first designed it.
Sometimes a piece arrives all at once. Sometimes it reveals itself in layers, over time. This one has definitely been the latter. The original still feels singular to me, and this past year has been about learning from it rather than replacing it.
After a lot of experimenting I finally stumbled onto the reflection effect I’d been chasing, and with Justin joining the crew we were able to actualize it.
Justin’s attention to detail and meticulousness with simple craft processes made this possible. My brain tends to move faster than life. I can see the finished piece in my head long before it exists, but the work itself has its own pace. Justin has a way of slowing the process down to that speed. That patience with the small movements, the tiny adjustments, is what allowed this lighting effect to finally come together.
So here’s a peek at the lighting in the liquor shelf section of the credenza. Hope you dig it.
