A week ago I had my first performance en pointe. A 10-minute improv set at that. Thank you ( and especially), for giving me the space to explore something I questioned would ever be possible for me. Thank you,, for taking on the challenge of interpolating the magnificence that is and being my "spiritual barre" that night. Thank you to,, and for planting the seed. Fun fact: The last photo is the from my first session pancaking my pointe shoes on my own in my dad's house in the beginning stages of foreclosure (July 2023). Soon after this I was living alone in the house with no way of keeping it. This moment was a way of keeping my sanity and gratitude during this time, as this was in preparation for the first full-time season with Hiplet, and thus, my first time ever training en pointe routinely. Pointe shoes remind me of the opportunity to find newness and play when experiencing continuous attacks on my happiness. They also remind me of how much my desire to realize my dreams outweighs any negative self-talk regarding those dreams.
And onward we elevate.

Thank you, and, for bringing me back home AT THE RIGHT TIME. I say this because I learned in that moment I was truly equipped to give not just the Dance Program but all of the Knox-Galesburg community members I came in contact with what was needed over the last four years. Had to use Leap Day (and the day of the ' last tour show of the season) to make sure we all got properly educated. I am beyond grateful to have become the visual I didn't have as a youth for the last 3 performance seasons with Hiplet. In the black American community, we still have many rivers to cross regarding providing safe spaces for our queer men to be themselves and not have their truths debated and defaced. I'll continue to be one of the many faces and BAWDIES to bring that conversation to the forefront. Because it's necessary and because I can. En punto.
