Legault arrived at UC Berkeley knowing he wanted to study biology, but didn’t know he wanted to be a veterinarian. That revelation came toward the end of his first year, when he boarded a BART train to Oakland Animal Services (OAS) for what would ultimately become the first of many volunteer shifts.
“In the shelter, you’re able to stand up for a lot of animals that otherwise wouldn’t have anyone,” he said. “I want to be the person advocating for them.”

By applying decades of findings from former Professor Irina Conboy’s longevity research in an organ-on-a-chip system developed by Professor Andreas Stahl, scientists were able to accelerate the biological age of human fat and liver tissue derived from stem cells. After four days of exposure to blood serum from older donors, the new tissue cells exhibited signs of aging—chronic inflammation, impaired blood sugar regulation, disrupted fat metabolism, and DNA damage—normally seen in people after decades.
“No one expected that in four days, you can age freshly differentiated stem cell-derived tissues to the degree that they are now old,” said Stahl.
And for the first time ever, the researchers used the system to evaluate the capacity of specific therapies—including several major drug candidates—to reduce human tissue aging. Conboy, whose research has challenged the idea that aging is a fixed process governed by the passage of time, said the system could make it easier for researchers to screen next-generation longevity therapeutics without waiting years for results.
“Our collaborative work with Andreas’ lab group strengthened our understanding that aging is not just the progression of time,” she said. “We are regenerating systems. We are capable of repair.”

Over two days, hundreds of academic and industry leaders gathered to build partnerships in biotech and healthcare across the Pacific. They heard from innovators leading the way in healthcare investing, drug development partnerships, entrepreneurship, and artificial intelligence—and watched 60 companies from the United States and Asia deliver pitch presentations.
To close out the conference, Dean Ackerly and fellow Berkeley leaders showcased how UC Berkeley research is steering the future of healthcare.
“Global health starts with clean air, clean water, secure and healthy food, and a stable climate,” he told the audience, emphasizing that the roots of health reach far beyond hospitals and clinics. Climate change multiplies health threats worldwide, and, as he stressed, “alleviating poverty is health policy.”
