Migratory fish are incredible. They travel long distances to and from their spawning grounds annually to reproduce. Some species are anadromous—they are born in freshwater, spend most of their adult lives in saltwater, and then return to freshwater to spawn. Others are catadromous, meaning the opposite; they are born in saltwater, mature in freshwater, and migrate back to saltwater to spawn.
To make these impressive movements, migratory fish depend on healthy, free flowing rivers, but they often face barriers like dams and culverts that prevent them from completing their journeys. When man-made structures block their route, migratory fish can't reach their native spawning grounds to reproduce and maintain their population levels.

Each spring, red knots set out on one of the longest migrations in the bird world—more than 9,000 miles from the southern tip of South America to their Arctic breeding grounds. Along the way, they stop along the shores of the Delaware Bay to rest and refuel.
The survival and productivity of red knots are closely tied to the life cycle of an iconic New Jersey species—horseshoe crabs. At the same time that red knots arrive to our state, horseshoe crabs are spawning on the beaches of the Bay, laying dense clusters of nutrient-rich eggs that are a vital food source for red knots. The eggs allow the birds to rebuild the energy reserves they need to complete the final stretch of their journey north.
After fueling up on horseshoe crab eggs, red knots continue to their Arctic breeding grounds, where they nest in shallow scrapes lined with leaves, lichen and moss on the open tundra. Once their breeding season ends in late-July to August, they make their incredible migration south, passing through New Jersey once again.

Striped skunks breed from February to March, and females give birth to a single litter during May or early June. At birth, young striped skunks, called kits, are blind and deaf, and are fully dependent on their mother for care. Young skunks will nurse in the den for about a month and a half. Once they are fully weaned, they will follow their mother in a single file line and learn to forage and hunt.
