Heightened Scrutiny, the documentary that follows the first transgender attorney to argue in front of the Supreme Court, is centered around Chase Strangio’s fight for transgender adolescents’ access to gender-affirming healthcare. This case, which originated here in Tennessee, was a turning point for youth and adult access to gender affirming care across our country.
The film examines the relationship between mainstream media and legislative realities, and offers an analysis on how biased coverage impacts dangerous laws that upend transgender lives in the U.S.

Ann Elizabeth Goodwin ) and Gertrude "Whittier" Whitney ) met in Buffalo, NY around 1916, where they were both serving as social workers through the Traveler's Aid Society. In 1917, Elizabeth wrote to her brother, Levi, about Getrude feeling ill.
"I love her so much that I can't bear to think of her being so miserable all the time with grave possibilities for the future if she does not get well soon."
Luckily, Gertrude did get better. They came to Nashville in 1921 to work as armed detectives with the Women's Protective Bureau. They lived together, with their two adopted sons Paul and Daniel Whitney-Goodwin, in a house at 1230 18th Ave. S. They lived here for about a decade before moving to Dallas, Texas.
Gertrude's family actually moved to Cookeville, Tennessee during her childhood, so when she died in 1943, her body was brought back to be buried in Cookeville City Cemetery.
Elizabeth lived on in Dallas, without her beloved Gertrude, until 1986, when she suffered complications with pneumonia. A few years ago, I spoke with one of Elizabeth's relatives who confirmed the family knew the two women were a romantic couple, even though Gertrude's obituary called them "close friends."

The Cap and Bells focused on musical and comedic performances, often including members of the football team. Image 2 features football players acting out the Greek romance of Daphnis and Chloe from the isle of Lesbos.
Men playing female roles on stage dates back centuries, with Elizabethan theater providing some of the most famous examples, including the possible origins of the phrase "drag queen" as their long dresses literally dragged the floor.
While Elizabethan times banned women from performing publicly, that was not true during Nashville in the 1930s. It seems these men simply had fun crossdressing. The crowd enjoyed it, too. Newspaper articles implied the Cap and Bells were extremely popular--so much so that they toured their acts across the South.

Nashville Queer History in partnership with is creating a coloring book honoring America's LGBTQ history, as part of our nation's ongoing semiquincentennial recognition.
If you are an LGBTQ artist based in the United States with some experience doing black and white line work, then please apply using the Google Form link in our bio. Applications are due Monday, March 2.
Each artist will be paid $100 for the creation of 2 line pages, and get a copy of the coloring book.
We anticipate printing 500 physical copies of the coloring book, and making some pages freely available to download online.
Must be 18+ years old to apply. Priority will be given to LGBTQ artists based in the USA. Application linked in bio. DM for questions/concerns.
