“I’ve been trying to do my best to grasp at the vastness of the bothy ballads of the north east and their infinite wisdoms, with a particular interest in the way they reflect the workers, their stories, struggles, whisper networks of experiences on certain farms, songs of the weavers, the fisherman, the traveller communities, and many many more.

the song that tells us of the rebellion of a farmer against the national insurance tax and his cow that stood at the centre of it all.

These songs, testaments of living histories, and persisting melodies force me to think of my own practice of song writing and what i want to document as histories.

Radical solidarities, living on the tip of tongues, that one must grow up around until it becomes muscle memory.

These ballads led me to more archives, more resources, led me to the collection of political songs by janey buchan and make me ask myself, What does it mean to sing radically, what is radical for most, for me, for you?

Singing badly, perhaps?

singing in a tongue, dialect, language, one doesn’t speak, perhaps?

Singing to the humming of murderous drones that surveil you, like Ahmed Muin Abu Amsha and the Gaza birds singing, perhaps?

Learning a song brought to you as a gift by someone, perhaps?

A means for getting to know someone, perhaps?

Singing badly while you work, singing of your work?

Humming to regulate your nervous system?

Singing in response to a singing songbird?

Singing to the river?

Singing so terribly that you defy all withstanding structures of classical music and song, perhaps?

What is radical, is subjective.

But singing, is a birthright.

whether good or bad is not up to us to decide.”

Rah Naqvi, artist-in-residence at Deveron Projects weaves together reflections from their time so far here in Huntly. Head over to our website via the link in our bio for their beautiful thoughts on time, language, muscle memory, and the tangibility of time when experiencing the knowledges shared by song keepers, singers, crafters, carers, and foragers.

Rah Naqvi probes into the relationship to home, and common objects made uncommon in 'an elegy for wounded places'. The work looks at how during losses and amidst the rubble of destroyed homes, material possessions become rare monuments. Rubble, dirt, and everyday objects have become recurring themes in Rah Naqvi’s practice.

'an elegy for wounded places' is on view till 23 May 2026 as part of 'and the trees sing resistance songs', Rah's solo show at TARQ.

khwabgah was given a title borrowed and inspired by my friend Sanj who’s imaginations have been so important for me and many who meet them in the words and worlds they imagine
important in helping me continue towards imaginations that most will find impossible, most will find emotional
this sister quilt is sibling to the blanket of solidarity, made from leftover fabric from it’s first cutting, it is in the image of women at leisure, crafting the roof of an indestructible home, a home built of ideas, ruins, and dreams, where the rubble will find belonging again.

I managed to complete the blanket mostly during and after my time at rafooghar
this utopian field of rest and restoration will always remind me of pinky, ruhi, shehzaadi, anjali, billo baaji, fawzia baaji, saniya, and everyone at rafooghar really

today and every other day, may there be monuments and havens of relief for workers, labourers, mothers and daughters, for the landless, the fatigued, the ones working through this deadly heat, the ones who carry on shoulders bare, all invisible labour and visible injustices, whose wombs were taken, those weary and fatigued in the endless, tireless, cruelty manufacturing state
A cross between a charpai and a harp, this work by Rah Naqvi is at once furniture, instrument and tool. Rah began by carving four feet, followed by an extensive process of study to turn a tool of rest into a mechanism of sound. Titled ‘harpai’, this work aims to expand our lens towards objects and include the one who is making it, while asking: what does it mean to make labour audible? To give rhythm to exhaustion, to repetition, to the everydayness of making?

On view at our current exhibition 'and the trees sing resistance songs' by Rah Naqvi until 23 May 2026.

and the trees sing resistance songs, 2026
is on view at till the 23rd of May

and the trees sing resistance songs is a non linear poetic intervention of laments, repetition, and text. Mourning and gestures of grief and prayer are dissident acts explored in this work, prayer that speaks to land and the weight of history it holds. Here the non-human presence of trees, soil, sky, and land bear silent witness becoming lasting archives for mutual histories.
The thumping sound of a beating trunk of an aged tree runs across the entire film with lamentations describing the cause for sorrows. These laments are recited by my aunt, myself and my grandmother.
Shia mourning traditions embody grief as a practice of remembering history, visceral - as though the atrocities endured were of the day before. You will find repeated gestures across the film, a repetition that is cyclical, much like violence, a testimony beyond what constitutes as formal documentation.
Urging that the body, the land, and the trees remember grief beyond time and place.

A lot of the text is whispered, much like a prayer, and the film’s ending too finds itself uttered in my grandmother’s daily prayers for mercy and grace afforded onto this world.

text written and sung by rah
i’ve been painting with soil,
marking and measuring it by scent when it’s wet
soil from amma’s potted plants, new and old siblings in her care

i’ve been collecting pigments from where wood erodes, into earth, where death turns into life, where spores blanket new leaves to fool us into thinking it’s already fall
and another year passes

i am grasping, confronting the comforts of food, body, shelter, and every illustration of peace marketed in empty luxuries,
waste that’ll find its way to our coasts, break our soil, become stone
never eroding never dead to ever be nurturing
zionism, much like hindutva, much like the culture of plastic, degrading and desecrating to the natural order, much like caste- cancerous, much like wealth and made belief supremacies,
greed, brings nothing to land

In its pursuits of purity it puts nurturers, foragers, makers, fighters, mothers, futures, fathers, elders, breathing histories into the earth,

perhaps in the richness of that soil is the reckoning they do not foresee
for they can dig for eternities to trace lineages of greatness only to find a soil rich in resistance, rich in a colour they can never have

their lineage will be one of shame, eternal shame

benign, no glory no artefact of supremacy
just shame and indignities in the face of every unearthed fortitude

—————————————————

i’m watching as she turns to prayer to understand, comprehend, escape
in pursuit of understanding this inherited faith,
amidst its fallacy and failure, i am tracing the lines where it draws similarities between blood and soil

i’ve been smuggling some mud from amma’s garden every two years i go back home
i’ve been asking her to ask her god, of the grief he holds - where resides it’s weight in the vastness of an endless universe- grief that is both, a witness and a subject to it’s own creations and crimes

cont.
spent winter writing and embroidering this book, 17 pages of anti capitalist affirmations to stay on

i’ve felt more capacity, more honesty and intention when i’m off this app, so i’ll be using this page merely as an archive till my website is updated🔻

if you need me, email me, otherwise khuda hafiz🍃✨

wishing whoever is reading, strength and resilience 🤲🏽✨
