Hidden lacquer art gallery on Hiroshima’s Buddhist Altar St.

Take a walk with me through the Buddhist altar shop my family has been running for over 100 years, and ride the elevator up to the gallery where I showcase my art, seemingly conjured out of air, thanks to the power of lacquer✨

Visitors are always welcome at my gallery on the 2nd floor of Takayama Kiyoshi, my family’s Buddhist altar showroom, on Hiroshima’s Butsudan (Buddhist Altar) Street. It is about halfway between Hiroshima Station and Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, so please consider dropping in to learn more about the art of shikki lacquerware when you visit.

Urushi, an almost magical gift of nature.
Natural lacquer, derived from sap of Asia’s urushi trees, is applied to Japanese lacquerware, known as shikki, to provide its protective, anti-bacterial surface and lustrous, polished finish.

I take the ancient art of lacquerware production to new heights, crafting beautiful objects, seemingly out of thin air.

Please come by my gallery in Hiroshima and hold these light-as-a-feather labors of love with your own hands.

Thank you for finding my page. My name is Naoya Takayama, and I am a lacquerware artist based in Hiroshima.

My family has been selling Buddhist altars here for over 100 years. After years of training and restoring temples the ancient capital of Kyoto, I have recently turning my lacquer application and polishing skills, to the crafting of beautiful lacquerware that is equally at home in a gallery or on your dining table.

When Tradition Meets Modern Sweetness: The Invisible Connection ✨🥞

Two years ago, a fateful encounter with a passion-driven pancake chef changed the trajectory of my lacquerware. His vision went far beyond crafting the perfect, delicious pancake; he was on a mission to bring true happiness to his customers.
His dedication moved my heart as a traditional artisan. In that moment, the potential of Urushi (lacquerware) felt limitless. Inspired, I created a special Urushi plate—a stage for his creations—where the warmth of Japanese tradition meets modern, fluffy sweetness.
It is a reminder that when craftsmanship and innovation collide, the possibilities are infinite. Experience this unique, heartwarming fusion born in Hiroshima.

Crafting with the Soul of Hiroshima: Earth & Sea

Every masterpiece begins long before the first coat of lacquer. At Takayama Kiyoshi, we create our own original "Shitaji" (foundation) by blending natural earth with Gofun—a fine powder made from crushed Hiroshima oyster shells.
Using the ancient Kanshitsu (dry lacquer) technique, we layer hemp cloth and our signature base to create forms that are remarkably lightweight yet incredibly strong. This fusion of land and sea provides the life force for our lacquerware.
No machines. No shortcuts. Just the rhythm of the artisan’s hands, honoring a 120-year-old tradition. Experience the authentic texture of Hiroshima craftsmanship. ✨

Whispering Stars: The Art of Silver Nashiji
Gaze into the depths of "Urushi" (natural lacquer) and you will find a galaxy.
This piece is crafted using the Nashiji technique. After applying a rich coat of jet-black lacquer, I carefully sprinkle fine silver flakes across the surface. Once dry, several more layers of translucent lacquer are applied and then meticulously polished back to reveal the silver shimmering from beneath.
The result is a "Nagatogi-dashi" (grind-out) finish—a mirror-like surface where the silver appears to float in a deep, dark void. It is a slow, meditative process where nature’s raw materials meet decades of precision.
In a world of mass production, we invite you to hold a piece of the cosmos, handcrafted in the heart of Hiroshima.

The Pure Heart of Urushi: Filtering Perfection
Before the first stroke of the brush, there is a moment of pure focus.
This is the process of filtering "Urushi" (natural lacquer)—the sap of the lacquer tree. Every drop is a gift from nature, and to ensure its legendary mirror-like gloss, we filter it by hand through traditional paper.
At Takayama Kiyoshi, we honor the slow, intentional path of 100% handmade craftsmanship. No machines, no shortcuts. Just natural earth, oyster shells, and this pure, filtered sap, layered over and over to create a soul for each piece.
Experience the quiet beauty of authentic Hiroshima craftsmanship.
