When her work came through our Birds exhibition submissions, it unsettled us in the best way. Black and white, rendered with almost exhausting precision, each piece feels less like an observation of nature and more like a record of fixation — what happens when an artist refuses to stop until the image in their head finally exists on paper.
Nanami grew up between Sydney and Tokyo, in a home where Japanese ink paintings lived comfortably beside Australian bush landscapes, where nothing needed to be unified to belong. That collision — cultures, aesthetics, the broken next to the beautiful — never resolved itself. It became the work.

I tried to make this work four times... With each attempt it asked for something quieter, even when I was so frustrated with it - still, I didn’t want to let it go.
As it developed, the iris began to merge with the spirit of a fighting fish - a strange, quiet mutation.
Both endure. Both hold their ground.
The forms echo and face each other, moving and resisting at once, finding balance through movement, form and flow.
This piece came from staying with that tension - perseverance shaped into rhythm.
This piece is part of my next ‘Nana-Kami’ series II.
