I’ve learned countless important lessons while I was in L.A. from people all over the world and in various social classes.
I remember a little allegory about the difference between education I had and other countries’.
When I was a student, I was looking for a battery pack that fit for my camera.
I asked my film equipment dealer friend Don whether he had one or not. He casually said “No, I don’t have one now. Why don’t you build one yourself?”
I thought he was crazy. In the manual, it clearly says “Do not use batteries from 3rd parties”. Making it by myself? It’s just ridiculous.
I asked anyway “What do you mean by that?”
Don said “It has an AC adapter, right? Check the voltage output and you just feed the same juice to the camera. It’s just a battery! Voltage, amperage, negative and positive. Voltage is voltage. There’s no special ‘voltage’ only for SONY, silly.”
I know it’s not THAT simple but the idea of it was eye-opening.
I also knew using my handcrafted battery would kill my camera instantly.
My problem was I couldn’t or didn’t even try to apply the knowledge to life. The mechanism of the AA battery used to light up a simple 1.5v miniature light bulb is no different from the battery used to power up a SONY video camera.
I just assume “It’s a SONY! It must be more complicated than that.”
My mind couldn’t see that something that looks complicated might be controlled by a deceptively simple rule.
Use knowledge. That was missing from my education.

L.A.にいる間、様々な国や階層の人たちからたくさんのことを学んだ。
一つの寓話は、僕の受けた教育と他人の教育の違いを知った経験から。
映画学校にいたころ、カメラ用のバッテリーパックを探してた。
映画機材商の友人ドンに聞いてみたら「今はもってないね。そんなの自分で作ったらいいじゃないか？」
僕はドンは馬鹿だと思った。説明書に「純正以外のバッテリーを使うな」って書いてあるじゃないか。自分で作る？それは馬鹿げてる。
ドンに一応聞いた「それ、どういう意味？」
ドンは「ACアダプターついてるだろ？何ボルト出力してるか調べて、それと同じジュース（電気）を流してやればいいだけだ。電圧・電流、マイナス・プラス。電圧は電圧だろ。『SONY専用電圧』なんてものはないんだ、お馬鹿さん」
そこまでシンプルでないことくらいは分かる。でも、この考え方は目からウロコだった。
現実的には、無知な僕の自作電池は一瞬でカメラを壊すだろう。
僕の問題は知識を現実で使おうともしなかったこと。仕組み的に言えば1.5vの豆電球を点ける単三電池も、カメラを起動するバッテリーも同じもの。
それなのに僕は「これはソニーだ。もっと複雑に違いない」と決めつける。
複雑なものでも、実は嘘みたいに単純な法則で動いているかもしれない。
知識を使う意識、それが足りなかった。

I’ve been fortunate to have great teachers in my life.
My very first film making teacher was Mr. Dov Simens. He is the founder of Hollywood Film Institute. He taught big names like Spike Lee and Quentin Tarantino.
I took his crash course while my English was still developing.
One of his interesting remarks was when you work with a crazily talented douchebag who you would never want to work with again, there is a great parting shot to tell him you are pis*ed and you can still keep the relationship.
“I will never work with you again until next time!”
This sounds like a very Hollywood word of wisdom.
And that genius would casually answer “OK” and work again with you if necessary as if nothing had ever happened.
This love and hate situation is very common if you’re in a creative environment.
What Dov tried to say was “Filmmaking is a business. It’s not a place to make friends. You better be ready to get the best out of douchebags.”
If you try to avoid all the crazy but talented people in Hollywood what’s the point of staying there?
It took a while to become accustomed to Dov’s pragmatic attitude. And now I know the real meaning. There's no point in fighting over and over again.
I just won't work with him until next time.

僕は何人ものすばらしい先生に恵まれた。
僕の一番最初の映画製作の先生はドヴ・シメンズ先生だった。彼はハリウッド・フィルム・インスティテュートの創立者で、スパイク・リーやクエンティン・タランティーノなんていうビッグネームを教えてきた人。
僕は彼のスパルタ集中コースを英語に少し慣れた頃に受けた。
彼は面白いことを言う人で、中でも気に入ったのは「君らが二度と働きたくないと思う頭のおかしい才能あるクソ野郎に、君のイラつきを伝えながらも人間関係を保てる捨て台詞がある」というもの。その一言は、
「オマエなんかと二度と一緒に仕事しない。次の機会まではな！」
すごくハリウッドらしい金言。
で、その天才は軽く「OK」って言って、次の機会には何事もなかったかのように一緒に仕事をするはず。
この愛憎劇はクリエイティブな環境ではよくあること。ドヴが言わんとしたことは「もしハリウッドで“おかしい人”全部を避けるのなら、そこにいる意味はなに？」って話。
「映画作りはビジネスだ。友達作りの場じゃない。どんなクソ野郎でも利用してやれ」ということだけど、僕はなかなかこの実利主義的な考え方に慣れることができなかった。でも今なら分かる。嫌いな人がいるたびに、いちいち喧嘩別れしても仕方がないもの。
次の機会まで、一緒に仕事をしなければいいだけ。

A beautiful corridor in Gordes.
After spending long enough years in L.A., an unfortunate thing happened to my body shape. I guess I had one too many hamburgers, pizzas and cola.
My blood pressure rose to a critical level. I had constant headaches and back pain. I couldn't even stretch my body to reach dishes on the top shelf.
A few years later, we had a son.
At that point, I finally realized “How can I play with him if I stay like this?”
I decided to change myself.
I knew joining a gym wouldn’t work for me because I could easily see the process of me giving up. The first day, I would be too excited and try all the equipment available. Next day I’d take a day off because I’d be tired and sore. On the third day, it would usually rain so I should stay at home. The fourth day was the last day, I feared getting another pain from sore muscles.
That’s very me.
So I set two limitations to give myself no room for excuse. One, I must not step out of my house even an inch. Two, everything had to be done in a spot as large as a Yoga mat.
I picked two items that met the criteria, an Ab wheel and a Mini Stepper. I still do both six days in a week since then.
In 8 months and 2 worn out steppers, I successfully lost 44 Lbs. I even got the lowest ever body fat percentage of 9. At 9%, you catch a cold as easily as a child. So I put some weight back.
This has been my ideal body.
I still stay fit after two decades. I can’t possibly do this again so I’d better keep it.

ロサンゼルスで長い時間を過ごした僕は、ハンバーガーやピザ、コーラをちょっと摂りすぎたようで体型に不幸なことが起きていた。
血圧は生命の危険を感じるほど上がり、毎日頭痛と腰の痛みに悩まされた。棚の上の皿を取るのに、体を伸ばせないほど。
数年して息子ができて、ようやく気づいた。
「こんなんでどうやって子供と遊ぶんだ？」
よし、自分を変えよう、そう決意した。
僕はジムに通うタイプではない。三日坊主が簡単に想像できてしまう。初日は調子にのって機械を全部試す。次の日は疲れと筋肉痛で休む。三日目はだいたい雨が降ると決まってるから、家にいる。四日目は筋肉痛が怖くて休む。これが最後の日になる。
すごく僕っぽい。
だから僕は二つのルールを決めた。
一つ、家から一歩も出ないこと。二つ、全てが畳一畳くらいで済む方法にすること。
選んだのは腹筋ローラーとステッパー。これは今でも週六で続けてる。
8か月と二台の潰れたステッパーの後、僕は20キロの減量に成功して、人生最低の体脂肪率9%をものにした。ただ9%は幼児みたいにすぐ風邪をひくから、少し体重を戻した。
これが僕の最適状態。
もう一回同じことができるとは到底思えないから、20年経った今もそれを維持してる。維持の方が断然楽。

A bit scary staircase of the Chambre d'hôte I stayed in L'lsle sur la Sorgue.
When I was in my 20's, I liked watching news shows. I especially liked the anchor who was known as very outspoken.
At the end of every show, he picked up a few letters from viewers.
One day, he started reading a 14 years old girl’s letter.
In the first sentence she said,
“I am a somthing-ist.”
Means she was politically biased towards “something” which I don’t remember.
The anchor stopped reading there and looked directly into the camera and said with a big smile,
“Already?”
And he put the letter back on the desk and moved on to the next one.
I have to admit I liked what he said.
Back in the day, I was encouraged to think for myself but seemed like my decisions were always wrong.
I was screaming in my head “what is the deal with thinking for myself?”
But I realize now, I was learning something really important along the way.
It was just, I’d got chances to be exposed more to differences, choices, ideas or even lies before I started making my own decisions based on limited resources.
For kids, being biased toward somthing at such a young age gives more harm than good.
Kids are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of adults around them.
So if a fanatic persuasively talks to a kid about his beliefs and successfully turns this poor kid into saying “I’m a something-ist!”
How do we talk to the kid?
I’d say with a big smile “Already?”
It’s a great way to open a conversation.
宿泊したリル・シュル・ラ・ソルグのシャンブルドットにあった、ちょっと怖い階段室。
僕は20代の頃、ニュース番組、なかでも言いたい放題のアンカーが出る番組が好きだった。
彼の番組の最後には、読者からの手紙を読むコーナーがあった。
ある日、彼は14歳の少女の手紙を読み始めた。
彼女の最初の一文は、
「私はナントカ主義者です」
つまり、彼女は何主義か忘れたけど政治的に偏った考えの持ち主だった。
アンカーはすぐに読むのをやめて、にっこり笑ってカメラを見据えると一言。
「そんなに若くして？」
手紙を机に置くと、次に進んでしまった。
僕はアンカーの一言が気に入った。
昔々、子供の頃に「自分の頭で考えろ」って言われた。それなのに、僕が考えたことは何もかも間違いだったようで、いつも頭のなかで「自分の頭で考えろ、はどこへ行ったんだ？」と叫んでいた。
でも、今なら分かる。
僕はかなり重要なことを、このプロセスで学んだ。
つまり、拙い頭で考えて自分自身の正解を導き始める前に、人との違いや選択肢、考え方や嘘にひっきりなしに出くわす機会を得た。
近くにいる大人たちから大きな影響をうけてしまう子供にとって、若いうちから何らかの主義に走るのは、百害あって一利なし。
でも、もしどこかの狂信者が子供に何かを吹き込んで、その子を「僕はナンチャラ主義者だ！」と信じ込ませてしまったとしたら、どうやってその子と話をすべきか。
僕ならあのアンカーに習った通り「そんなに若くして？」と聞くな。
これは、良い会話の始め方だなぁ。

A small restaurant in Antwerpen, Belgium.
It’s been a long time since I last posted here.
How have you all been doing?
The last few years, I have been watching my son study hard for the university entrance exam. In my nature, I am easily influenced by people around me. As I watched him, I became inclined to do something new.
In a list of new challenge candidates, I decided to give it a try for a literary award.
I’d never written a novel before but I was determined to write for two hours everyday after work.
In a year, I satisfactorily finished writing 300 pages along with countless rewrites.
I sent it in to the publisher the other day. I have started writing the next one already.
That’s what I did during my absence here.
Many more things happened. The saddest of all was that my teacher, Mr. Baran, who I respect and admire the most, had passed away. Last year, I contacted him by email for the first time in about 30 years because out of the blue I wanted his book he used in the class which I apparently lost when I moved. After a few email exchanges, he kindly offered to send a copy to me and I told him I’d at least pay for the shipping.
That was the last communication I had with him. I’m sad but I’m thankful that I could spend a tiny moment before he was gone.

僕は人に影響を受けやすいので、ここ数年息子が大学入試の勉強をするところを見ていて、何か新しいことに挑戦したくなった。
挑戦したいことのリストの中から、僕が選んだのは文学賞への応募。
小説は書いたことがなかったけど、毎日仕事のあとで2時間書くことを決めた。
1年経って、何度も書き直した挙げ句に300ページを仕上げた。
出版社に原稿を送って、すぐ次の作品を書き始めた。
というのが、僕の1年。
その他いろんなことが起きた。一番悲しかったのは、僕の敬愛するバラン先生が亡くなったこと。去年、ふと大学時代にバラン先生が使っていた教科書を読み返したくなって探してみると、引っ越しで失くしてしまったみたいだった。約30年ぶりにバラン先生にコンタクトを取って、何度かメールのやりとりをしたら「一冊プレゼントするよ」と言ってくださった。僕も、せめて送料の負担だけはと申し出て、本は無事届いた。
それがバラン先生との最後の通信になってしまった。とても悲しいけど、先生が亡くなる前の短い時間を過ごせたのは貴重だった。

My last name is Ishikawa. I need to identify myself for the story.
When I was young I wanted to be an actor and a film director.
The Hollywood Ninja star Mr. Sho Kosugi has had the biggest influence over my life. He is the most humble person I’ve ever met.
When I was a high school student, I started writing him letters.
One day, he wrote me back and he replied to every letter I’d sent since then.
He even offered me to visit him if I was ever in Hollywood.
I did so a few times.
At his office, I was way too excited and was talking about my stupid film ideas as he listened to me with a warm smile on his face.
One day, then my girlfriend now my wife came to my studio with a phone in her hand.
She said “It’s Mr. Sho Kosugi.''
It was a job offer but I made the biggest mistake of my life.
Back then I was preparing for my first directing feature film.
I should’ve jumped on without even a thought. It’s Mr. Sho Kosugi!
But I prioritize my plan.
I let him down.
He thought it was a good opportunity for me to get to know people in the industory.
It exactly was and what happened to me after this added another blow.
One of the crucial pieces of equipment I bought was delayed.
The main actor fled to New York for a bigger movie.
Looking back, what was I thinking?
When you are preoccupied you lose your sanity.
Lesson learned with great pain.
I still keep all the letters from Mr. Sho Kosugi.
These are my treasures as well as admonishment for myself.

僕は若い頃、俳優と映画監督になりたかった。
ハリウッドスターのショー・コスギさん は、僕の人生に一番大きな影響を与えた先生であり、これまで出会った中で最も謙虚な人物。
始まりは僕が高校生の頃、先生に手紙を書き始めたこと。
信じられないことに本人から返事が届いた。
以来、ハリウッドで生きるアドバイスを添えて、毎回返事をくださった。
「ハリウッドに来たら事務所においで」と言っていただき、何度か伺った。
舞い上がった僕が、バカみたいな映画のアイデアを話してもうんうんと頷いて聴いてくれた。
ある日、当時の彼女（現妻）が、電話を手に僕のスタジオに入ってきた。
「ショー・コスギさんだよ」
ある仕事のオファー。でも僕は大きなミスを犯してしまう。
僕は初監督作品制作準備の最終段階で、自分の計画を優先して先生を失望させてしまった。
「業界の人と顔つなぎしておくいい機会だろう」と考えてくださっていたのに。
その後、僕に起きたことはまさに罰。
購入した重要な機材が期日に届かない。
主役の役者が”もっと大きな映画”のためにニューヨークに行ってしまった。
あのとき、僕は何を考えてたんだろう？
眼の前のことに夢中になりすぎると、正気を失う。
思い出すたび苦しくなる経験。
僕は今もショー・コスギ先生からの全ての手紙を、宝物であると同時に自分への戒めとして大切に持っている。

My film business professor Dr. Cook taught us something important about “reading”.
One day he asked “how many books do you read in a month?”
That’s a kind of question I love because I thought I was a super duper bookworm.
I read at least 100 books a month when I was young.
When I learned a famous author read 5 novels and some magazines daily, I successfully trained myself to copy him.
Back to Dr. Cook.
Just before I proudly raised my hand, he coldly said
“Nope! I don’t wanna know.”
What he said after that made the number of my readings down to almost “ZERO book a month”.
He said “Page turners don’t count.”
Page turners are the entertainment books that you can’t stop reading or No-Brainer “motivational” books which sadly accounted for the big part of my list.
“Reading means reading with struggle. Without struggle, you never ever call it reading.
How can you be creative when you are like a baby bird waiting for someone to feed you something delicious?
You must find things that nobody has ever tasted before and make the world understand it’s delicious! That’s your job.”
By the way Dr. Cook is not a square, stubborn person as you probably imagined from what I wrote.
He is a funny, insightful, loving professor/filmmaker who had earned 3 doctors degrees then.
Who am I to disagree?

映画ビジネスクラスの教授 ドクター・クックは『読書』について大切なことを教えてくれた。
ある日、教授が
「君らはひと月に何冊くらい本を読む？」
と聞いた。
僕は超弩級の「読書の虫」だと思っていたから、こういう質問は嬉しい。
僕は若い頃、月に少なくとも100冊の本を読んだ。芥川龍之介が一日に5冊の小説と雑誌を読んだと聞いて、それを真似した。
で、ドクター・クック。
僕が鼻息荒く手をあげようとした矢先、教授は冷たく言った。
「いや、聞きたくない」
教授の次の言葉は、僕のひと月の読書数をほぼ「ゼロ」まで引き下げた。
「“ページターナー“は読書に数えてはいけない」
ページターナーとは読むのをやめられないほど面白い本や、思考を必要としない自己啓発本のこと。悲しいかな、それは当時の僕の愛読ジャンルばかり。
「読書とは取り組む苦労があるもの。苦労のないものを一生『読書』と呼んではならない。
巣で口を開けて待ってる雛鳥のように、誰かが美味しいものを運んでくるのを待っていて、どうやってクリエイティブになる？誰も経験したことのない味を見つけて、それを世界に『こんなに美味しいものがある』と理解させるのが君らの仕事だ」
ところで、こう書くとドクター・クックは頭の固い頑固者に感じるかも。
実際は、面白くて洞察力がある人気者で映画監督、当時既に3つの博士号を持ってた。
そんな人の言葉に異を唱えるなら、僕は何者なんだ？という話。

Commuting time in Brussels.
I've learned listening to others is the most important quality we need.
Nowadays, it’s said that “communication skill” is the most important thing but something important is lost from the context.
Japanese are considered very quiet and are not good at showing what we think.
We are now educating our kids in the way they become able to express their thoughts.
But communication is not a one way deal.
I suppose we all know what “microphone feedback” is.
A microphone picks up sound and it goes into an amplifier and plays loud out from a speaker.
Then the microphone picks up the certain frequency from the speaker and sends it back to the amplifier again.
It starts to loop and when it comes to the point where the system can no longer process the sound properly, feedback occurs.
Our brains do similar things.
If we only feed our brain with information we prefer over and over again without even bother trying to reach for different ideas, that's a disaster waiting to happen.
Limiting ourselves only to expose acceptable ideas eventually pushes our system to the breaking point. We can’t stand knowing there are people who deny what we believe.
The world is not, will not be perfect.
Coping with differences is one way to live.
To do this, we need to listen, think, and return our thoughts to the other party and they would do the same to us.
The “communication skill” must be a set of two qualities, listen and express.
Listening part is more important than the other but it’s neglected.

人の話を聴く、というのは人として最も大切なことだと学んだ。
最近は「コミュニケーション能力」が一番重要だと言われるけど、その文脈の中で大切なものが失われている。
日本人は静かで、自分の考えを表現することが下手だと言われてきた反省から、今は「子どもたちが自分の考えを表現できるように」と教育している。
だけど、コミュニケーションは一方通行ではない。
誰もが知ってる、あの、マイクで話すと発生するハウリング。
マイクが音を拾うと、その音はアンプに送られ、スピーカーから出てくる。
特定の周波数をマイクが拾って、再びアンプに送る。信号がループして処理できなくなったところでハウリングが起きる。
僕らの脳も同じようなことをする。
もしも僕らが自分と反対の意見には目もくれず、同じ考えを持つ人の言葉だけに触れ、自己表現をしていたら？
悪いことが起きる予感。
いつか脳が処理の限界に達しハウリングを起こして暴走し、自分と意見が合わない人の存在を許せなくなる。
世界はこれまでもこれからも完璧ではあり得ないから、他者とうまく折り合いをつける。
人の言葉を聴き考えて、自分の考えを伝える。もちろん相手も同じことを返してくれる、これがコミュニケーション能力のはず。
聴く・表現する、は不可分。
でも聴く方が自己表現よりずっと大切なのに、なぜか軽視されてる。

One of my teachers from the University said when the world moves like a flip-book, it’s difficult for people to hide their true personality.
When it’s calm, pages flip slowly and the picture looks still. We are all relaxed and overlook subtle changes that are happening right before your eyes.
But at a time like right now, things move so quickly like never before.
The picture starts to animate and now we have no time to relax.
People reacted in a variety of ways in this whole pandemic pandemonium.
Some panicked, calm, angry and blamed whatever the government did.
In a few months, it turned out our government's plans seemed to be working.
Some adjusted their opinion.
Some were stuck with their anger.
Some were naively influenced by uncertain information.
But then it got worse and got better and got worse.
A real flip-book or a roller-coaster ride.
And what did we see?
Opinion pushers, opinion shifters, onlookers, responsibility tossers, pessimists, optimists, skepticists, zen-masters, angry Hulks, you name it.
Enough of my smart talk, I fess up what I was thinking in 2020 just to be fair.
I said “it'll end soon by October.”
Nope, it’s been more than 2 years and still going, dummy.

大学の先生の一人が「世界がパラパラ漫画みたいに動く時は、本当の性格を隠すのはむずかしい」と言ってた。
世界が落ち着いている時はゆっくりページを繰るから、みんなリラックスして眼の前で起きているちょっとした変化にも気づかない。
だけど（今のように）世界が目まぐるしく動いているときはパラパラ漫画が動き始めて、もうのんびりしていられない。
このパンデミックの大騒動のなか、出てきた反応はいろいろ。
平然としてる人、マスク買い漁る人、政府に怒ってばかりの人。
数か月すると、政府の政策が上手くいってる感じになった。
考えを現実に合わせて調節する人、怒りの感情を持ち続ける人、かんたんに不確かな情報に流される人。
と思ったら状況は悪くなって、良くなって、また悪くなる。
ほんとにパラパラ漫画かジェットコースターみたい。
そこで見たものは？
意見のゴリ押し屋、意見のすり替え屋、傍観者、責任なすりつけ屋、楽天家、厭世家、猜疑主義者、懐疑主義者、禅の師匠、怒ったハルクとかなんでもいた。
賢明な僕のスマートな話は置いといて、公平を期すため２０２０年に何を言ってたかを白状すると。
「こんなの１０月には終わるでしょ」
いんや、もう２年以上たってて、まだ続いてる。おばか。

It’s been a while. So busy working.
A flea market at Pl. du Jeu de Balle 1, Brussels.
In the 1977 movie “Annie Hall”, Woody Allen said “Sun is bad for you. Everything our parents said was good is bad. Sun, milk, red meat...college.”
It’s been 44 years since the movie was released.
Sun remains bad.
Milk and red meat can be problems depending on our eating habits.
College…well, education is more important than ever.
So many conflicts occur when our clocks of the brains are a little slow and can not keep up with society.
Dogs and cats, cats and mice can not get along. (Yes, they can. We’ve seen enough proofs on Instagram)
Kids are stupid. (No)
Men are logical and analytical while women are creative and emotional. (Is that so?)
Homosexuality is a disease. (Haha, No)
It’s our birthright whether we accept something new or not.
That being said, accepting them is inevitable if we wanna keep good relationships.
But it's worth it considering the level of respect we gain by WE paying respect first to others.
Best of all, when respect is bidirectional, everyone will be happy so easily.

子供はバカ。(いいえ)
男性は理論的で女性は感情的。(そうか？)
同性愛は病気。(あはは、ちがう)
新しいことを受け入れるかどうか決めるのは、僕らが生まれもった権利…とは言ったけど、人とうまくやっていきたいなら受容一択。
でも、先に相手を尊重することで、あとから僕らに戻ってくる尊敬の価値といったら計り知れない。
一番すごいのは、尊重が双方向のとき、全ての人がかんたんに幸せになれるということ。
