This is a dream come true that I have been working towards for a decade since beginning my journey as a photojournalist. I am immensely thankful to everyone involved: the Kung Fu Nuns and their spiritual leader, His Holiness, the for permitting me to document their story since six years; to VG-Bildkunst for supporting this project of mine with a photography grant and for believing in my vision; to and for initially facilitating the access to pursue this heart project of mine. Namaste everyone 🙏
The Kung Fu Nuns are part of an 800-year-old Buddhist sect named Drukpa, the Tibetan word for dragon. Besides practicing Kung Fu and Meditation, Drukpa nuns lead prayers, and journey by bicycle for thousands of kilometers through the Himalayas on their yearly Bike Yatras to highlight environmental causes, and educate people in the rural parts of Nepal and India about climate change and the importance of girls.

2. Jigme Rupa Lhamo, 26, pictured during Kung Fu training at the Druk Amitabha monastery in Kathmandu, Nepal, March 27, 2019. Jigme Rupa has been training Kung Fu since eight years. “Kung Fu makes me confident, I’m not afraid to go out by myself anymore. Girls are not allowed to go out by themselves, but they want to do many things. They get inspired by us.”
3. The Kung Fu Nuns perform an early morning puja (prayer chanting) at the main prayer hall at the Druk Amitabha Nunnery in Kathmandu, Nepal, April 7, 2019. Each day, the nuns perform two pujas, one in the early morning, and one in the evening.
4. Young nuns arrive with tea pots during the evening puja at the main prayer hall of the Druk Amitabha nunnery in Kathmandu, Nepal, March 22, 2023. It is the youngest nuns’ duty to serve tea during evening and morning pujas (prayer chanting).
5. The Kung Fu Nuns ride their mountain bikes in the morning during their cycle yatra in Mustang, Gandaki province, Nepal, March 19, 2023. The Buddhist Drukpa nuns conduct their cycle yatra annually, to promote environmental awareness and gender equality in the Himalayan region.

In March 2019, I first photographed the Kung Fu Nuns in their main nunnery in Kathmandu, the Druk Amitabha Mountain Nunnery, and then in July 2019 I traveled to Ladakh, India, to document the nuns teaching a week-long self-defense workshop to young Indian females.
.
In September 2019 I pitched the story to GEO magazine and to my great joy,, then director of photography of GEO, immediately said that he wanted to continue working on this powerful story with me and send me back to India/ Nepal together with a GEO magazine staff writer.
.
In November 2019, His Holiness, the the spiritual leader of the Buddhist Dragon order, traveled to Berlin, Germany, for a climate conference, where I was fortunate enough to meet with this living Buddha. He gave me his blessing to come back to India in April 2020, and document the Cycle Yatra through the Himalayas, on which HH and the nuns embark every year to promote environmental awareness.
.
Then, in February 2020, the pandemic broke out and since then, the project was on hold, and it was uncertain if we were ever going to be able to realize it together.
.
Finally, in March 2023, I was fortunate enough to return to Nepal #onassignment for GEO magazine together with brilliant writer Diana Laarz, to accompany the nuns on their Cycle Yatra through Nepal’s Mustang region.
.
Today, the story was finally published in GEO magazine. I cannot express enough gratitude to everyone who helped me make this dream come true:
.
Firstly, I would like to thank the Kung Fu Nuns and His Holiness from the bottom of my heart for welcoming me into their world and for trusting me with documenting their fascinating story.
