And just earlier today, The Atlantic published a piece titled “The YIMBY Hero Everyone is Shouting At.” The author of that article, Helen Lewis, quote tweeted Scott’s genocide admission tweet with this post today: “Wiener told me (in my story published today) that he wouldn’t call it a genocide, and objected to the purity tests of those who insisted on it: “If you’re not willing to use the exact language that we want you to use, then you’re a bad Jew”.”
I urge people to recognize Scott’s admission as political opportunism and to vote for in the CA-11 house race because Saikat will hold Israel to account via the Block the Bombs Act, Rashida Tlaib’s genocide resolution & shift U.S. foreign policy away from imperialism & impunity for Israel.
Senator Wiener’s admission will have an impact though: he serves at the Co-Chair of the Legislative Jewish Caucus and his declaration that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, although opportunistic and long overdue, is major for the California state legislature & locally in San Francisco politics.
This is a seismic shift because many in the local political space have remained silent on this issue because of Senator Wiener and his political operatives.
The pro-Israel era is over.
In Brisbane, we walked around the Central Business District (CBD), the botanic gardens, and along the Yarra river that runs through the city to the original. We took a ferry back to the CBD and enjoyed some pool time at the hotel before heading out to, a Turkish restaurant in the city’s West End for dinner. And closed out the night at a local grocery store.
Before Brisbane, we spent our last morning in Cairns with a lovely breakfast and coffee at (a real gem) before catching a flight to Brisbane.
The first stop of the day was which was a last minute addition to the itinerary. Followed by being taken to a pontoon boat situated on the reef where I both snorkeled and rode in a semi-sub to see the reef up close. It’s jellyfish season so I was in a wetsuit head to toe (photo 13) for the snorkel.
The day ended with a massive downpour which is common this time of year - Cairns is situated in a rainforest and it is the rainy season. It rains every evening.
Cairns is so beautiful and reminds me of Hawaii in many ways - the flora, fauna, mountains, color of the water.
Today was also a travel day to Cairns, a 3 hour flight north to Queensland — an entry point for the Great Barrier Reef (see video).
There is a touching makeshift memorial to the victims of the tragic antisemitic shooting that took place at Bondi Beach in December 2025 at the beginning of Hanukkah (last photo).
Collectively, this journey woke up parts of my soul, and made me feel seen and visible in a way that I never had before as a South Asian female from a Muslim family born and raised in the United States.
It has taken me this long to chronicle these experiences, which originally took place in 2022, the year before Israel’s U.S. backed genocide in Gaza began.
Upon reflection, I feel having these experiences immediately before the onslaught of violence and propaganda demonizing Palestinians, Muslims, and Arabs across the world and in this region had a divine purpose.
It empowered me with confidence and helped me along in my journey of decolonization. And it prepared me to come back home to challenge the imperialist dehumanization of Palestinians, Muslims, and Arabs.
In the West, Arabs are often flattened into a single archetype with the same canned racist tropes. In reality, the Arab world is extremely diverse — each place that I went had its own unique culture that proliferated in every aspect imaginable — food, music, customs, dress, manner of speaking, way of life, etc.
I wrote these guides and diaries with the hope that the reader learns something new; and that they open minds.
