The title is Fragments of a Place, and it connects directly to my travels in Mexico. I’m very familiar with some routes like the one from Mexico City to Guanajuato by bus, and from Guadalajara to Los Mochis, Sinaloa (where I’m from). I’ve built up a large number of photos from those travels and some of my work keeps returning to that material. For this painting in particular, I used a sequence of images taken just before arriving in Guanajuato.
At some point, I realised I keep circling the same ideas. Not intentionally, but certain structures or decisions come back and start forming their own logic. For example, the L-shaped composition comes from a division between land and sky, with the trees pushed to one side to hold the image together. I’ve been moving those trees around for a while now, sometimes placing them in positions that don’t fully sit right, just to see how far the image can stretch.
The red figures are inspired by some 17th-century landscapes, (Hobbema) as I’ve encountered similar references in real life. I started using that reference a few years ago, and it became a motif or symbol in my work, for example in the painting ‘Pastoral Avebury’, which I made after visiting that area and took some photos of some red figures.
Light has also been important here. I was inspired by a painting by Asher Brown Durand and looking at the Luminist painters, and how he returned to the same location under different conditions where he painted the same image twice for capturing changing seasons or different times. In this case, I’ve painted my own landscape but worked it by adding another light source from another photo, of the same place, of a different time, like a collage.
The trees are coming from different places altogether. Some are from other photos, and they’re not meant to sit naturally within the scene. I’m interested in building them through layers making them resemble leaves and foliage but not realistically.
These are some of the ideas behind the work:)
I’m painting for my next solo show in October, I’ll be sharing more details soon:)
Opening with a launch party on Friday evening (6–9pm), marking a 50th anniversary edition that celebrates trajectory with more than 70 artist studios, along with a full programme of workshops, performances, exhibitions, screenings, and events.
I’m now in Studio 108.1
I hope you can come to visit!

A visual artist exploring how we relate to place in the digital age. Her landscapes blend tradition and disruption—referencing the history of painting while reflecting the fragmented way we experience nature today.
Part of our inaugural exhibition, Through the Bridge.
I’ll be sharing more information of the paintings in other posts:)
The exhibition will be on display until the 25th of January if you want to visit
