The reality?
When strength training is age-appropriate and properly coached, it can help kids build strength, coordination, confidence, athleticism, and healthy habits that last a lifetime.
The goal isn’t to create little bodybuilders.
The goal is to help kids become stronger, healthier, and more confident versions of themselves.
Strong kids become stronger athletes.
And stronger adults.

Not long ago, I put 135 lbs on the bar and only made it through 2 reps before I stopped.
It caused a ton of pressure in my chest, and I knew it wasn’t the right time to push through it.
Today, I benched 115 lbs for 3 sets of 12.
More importantly, it felt normal. For the first time in a long time, it felt like I never had my chest cracked open.
Recovery after open-heart surgery isn’t always about adding more weight to the bar. Sometimes it’s about being able to do something that once hurt and realizing it doesn’t anymore.
One more step forward.
By God’s grace, one workout, one day, and one rep at a time.

Playing a game of slo-pitch softball doesn’t seem like much, but to me it’s a reminder of how far I’ve come.
One step at a time. One day at a time.
Thankful. Blessed. Giving God all the glory.

In reality, they’re one of the simplest and most effective exercises you can do.
Grip strength.
Core strength.
Posture.
Conditioning.
And research has shown that grip strength is closely linked to overall health and longevity.
Simple doesn’t mean easy.
Simple doesn’t mean ineffective.
Don’t overlook the basics.

Kidding. Mostly.
Today was my first time doing sled work in over a year. It wasn’t my best workout, but it’s another bucket list movement checked off.
Charlie won’t remember this workout. But she’ll always know Dad has her back at all times, in any situation.

155 lbs might not seem like much to some of you, but that’s because you’re only looking at the weight on the bar. I’m looking at everything it took to get here.
A year ago, I went through open-heart surgery and a recovery that hasn’t gone anything close to according to plan. Since then, I’ve learned that the physical recovery is only part of the battle. The mental recovery has actually been the hardest part, and it’s the part no one warns you about.
Learning to trust my body again. Learning not to panic every time something feels off. Learning that fear and caution aren’t the same thing.
Two weeks ago, I deadlifted for the first time since surgery. Today, I pulled 155 lbs. That’s less than half of what I was lifting before surgery, but it’s a lot more than I was lifting six months ago.
Today isn’t really about the weight. It’s about rebuilding trust, gaining confidence, and proving to myself that I can still do hard things. Every workout, every run, every bike ride, and every milestone helps quiet the voice in the back of my head that wonders if my body can still handle it.
June is Men’s Mental Health Month, and it has me thinking about how many battles people never see. We celebrate physical progress because it’s easy to measure. The mental side is harder to see; the fear, the anxiety, the self doubt, and the conversations you have with yourself before you even attempt something.
Today wasn’t just about lifting weights.
It was about proving to myself that I’m still moving forward; by God’s grace, one workout, one step, and one day at a time.

Today I got to 85.
The workout started out strong, but didn’t finish how I wanted. The flutters picked up, I got lightheaded, and I made the decision to stop.
Before surgery, I would have pushed through no problem, but I used my better judgement, against what my ego wanted.
Recovery has taught me that sometimes progress isn’t hitting the number you wanted. Sometimes it’s listening when your body tells you it’s had enough.
85 is still better than 0.
Tomorrow we try again.

I got my diagnosis in February and I was told I needed to slow down.
I kept training light weights 3 times per week and I walked into surgery at 175lbs. Strong, trained, ready.
I walked out of the hospital last week at 153lbs. Frail. Weak. A version of me I didn’t recognize.
I can’t lift for another 10–12 weeks. But I’m walking 20-30 minutes at a time and I’m eating again. Finally! Slowly gaining weight. Slowly rebuilding.
I’m nowhere close to what I once was, but I will get strong again, Not just for me, but for my boys. For my daughter on the way. For the life God still has planned for me.
“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary… but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.” — Isaiah 40:29–31
This isn’t the end of my story. It’s the start of the comeback.

What should have been an “easy” open heart surgery and 3–5 day recovery turned into me being cut open twice, a second surgery to drain potential internal bleeding, 28 hours of being under, and 9 days of narcotic-induced nightmares where I couldn’t tell what was real and what wasn’t.
I had erratic heart rhythms from severe atrial fibrillation; fluid on my lungs; fluid in my body; trouble breathing; and was put on heavy medications to get my body to reabsorb the fluid and pee it all out.
There were nights I couldn’t sleep for more than 90s at a time; days where I didn’t know what was real and what wasn’t; and moments where I wondered if I’d ever feel like myself again.
But I’m still here.
And I’m thankful. For everyone! For the prayers. For the people who checked in. For my fiancé, who’s six months pregnant and still held it all down. For my mom, who is waiting for hip replacement and still flew across the country to be here. John and the crew at thr gym! And for God.
I’ve said it before; just because you travel with Jesus, it doesn’t mean you won’t suffer; it means you never suffer alone. And I felt that truth every single day I was in that hospital bed.
ALSO, huge shoutout to all of the medical staff at the Maz Heart Centre at UofA. You’re all amazing!!!!
Full blog post coming soon. Can’t wait to get home to the boys!
