Seaspeaker (dir. Parvathi Nayar) is set in Urur Olcott Kuppam, where fisher elder S. Palayam records daily ocean data, blending faith and science. Partnering with researcher Nityanand Jayaraman, he co-founded “Science of the Seas.” His youth story, animated by shadow puppeteer Muthuchandran Rao, celebrates traditional knowledge in a changing world, passing wisdom to the next generation through story, song, and shadow puppetry. (Seaspeaker will be screened at an exhibition later this year at Muziris Contemporary, Colaba.)
The Altar (dir. Meera George) is a triptych of short performance films that draws on three women from the Old Testament — Vashti, Tamar, and Eve — and explores their stories in relation to their bodies, their rights, and the politics of visibility. Harssimran Juneja is a visual artist based in Ahemdabad whose work explore the contradictions of contemporary society through an unflinching, layered visual language. Influenced by Neo-expressionism, primitivism and street graffiti, his evolving body of work operates in the blurred space between narrative and abstraction.
