Daily rainfall has made for an early and abundant start to the morel season in our neck of the woods here in Vermont. Seen here is one of our first morels of the 2025 season found several days ago alongside a trillium. Are you finding these spring delicacies? ✨
Happy May - month of morels and the kick-off to the mushroom hunting season here in the Northeast! Spring has finally sprung here in Vermont, and we’re excited for the foraging season ahead. Here Ari holds a scarlet cup mushroom (Sarcoscypha coccinea), which we often find fruiting amongst ramps from April into May. Noemi, our five-year-old, had our first scarlet cup find of the season on April 10th, contrasting boldly with the lingering snow. These mushrooms stun the eye and appear positively unnatural with their brilliant crimson hue. We marvel at these spring beauties and look forward to the other magical finds that await us in the forest as the year unfolds. ✨ Have you found scarlet cups?
Want to get into foraging this spring? Sign up for the upcoming "Wild Spring Edibles of the Northeast" workshop on Sunday, May 11 at GMC headquarters!

Join Ari Rockland-Miller on a tour of spring’s wild tastes, beginning with a lesson on how to safely, ethically and fruitfully pursue Vermont’s spring wild plants and mushrooms. Then, join a guided foray exploring the woods around club headquarters and learn about the culinary and medicinal uses of your finds. The foray will cover topics including safety, strategy, ethics and sustainability. And stick around for a tasting after the hunt!

As I approach my most reliable hen of the woods tree - a hollowed giant, long gone but still producing - my steps slow to prolong the riveting suspense. This decaying oak let me down last year, but then again, so did my other trees … chalk it up to a bad season. After coming up empty last fall, I wondered if my favorite oaks were slowing down, but it seems they were only conserving stamina, preparing for an epic 2024. ✨ Have you been finding hen of the woods? The yellow foot chanterelles and hedgehogs - freshly plucked in the alpine air and still cold to the touch - are pristine and unblemished, a gift from the well of autumn’s abundance. ✨ Check out the link in our profile to read Ari’s latest post, “Mountain Mushroom Treasure Trove.”
Consistent rainfall has created the best season for black trumpets in recent memory here in Vermont. What have been your highlight finds this year?
My steps have slowed, imbued with anticipation as I close in on my chanterelle spot. Turning up a narrow streambed, rushing with runoff from last night’s soaking, there I find them, exactly where they fruited last year. Dozens of pristine chanterelle buttons glow with a resplendent gold, standing out against the mossy green backdrop. ✨ Check out the link in our profile to read our latest post “Chanterelles After the Solstice.”
