BOTENG BJA KGAPA (AT THE SACRED THRESHOLD)

A World Premiere Ritual Theatre Work by Mxolisi Masilela

Africa Month | The Tx Theatre | 16 – 24 May

Tembisa, South Africa — In a defining cultural moment for Africa Month, The Tx Theatre, in collaboration with Umzekelo Cultural Organisation and Imbewu Yesizwe, proudly announces the world premiere of Boteng Bja Kgapa (At the Sacred Threshold), a groundbreaking ritual theatre work written and directed by visionary theatre-maker Mxolisi Masilela, widely known as “The Great.”

This is not merely theatre. It is ceremony. It is invocation. It is return.

A THEATRE OF SPIRIT, MEMORY, AND CROSSING

Rooted in African cosmology and deeply informed by Bapedi spiritual philosophy, Boteng Bja Kgapa emerges from an ancient knowing: prayer is not spoken it is lived.

In this profoundly immersive work, the stage transforms into Kgoro the sacred threshold between worlds. Here, the body becomes altar, the voice becomes offering, and silence becomes the language through which ancestors speak.

Through a masterful fusion of movement, sound, and text, Masilela constructs a living ritual where:

Dance becomes invocation

Rhythm becomes remembrance

Performance becomes offering

This work reimagines the “church” not as a building, but as a site of convergence a sacred meeting point where the living and the ancestral exist in dialogue.

A RADICAL INVITATION
Boteng Bja Kgapa asks urgent and timeless questions:

What does it mean to pray with the whole being?

What must be sacrificed to be heard?

What does it mean to stand at the gate and to cross?

At its core, the work explores the cyclical nature of existence birth, becoming, death, and return asserting that life is not linear, but ritualistic, circular, and eternal.

This is theatre at its most essential: a ceremonial act of remembrance, a ritual of becoming, and a call to re-enter the sacred order of life.

This is what I get up to when I'm by myself! Growing up I used to listen to a lot of and, then in my early teens I got introduced to and really loved her delivery Fusing African melodies with a bit of Arabic improvisation.... Now I'm more into Carnatic Music, checking Gamakas and Hindustani ragas. My current favorite carnatic vocalists are "Nina Burmi" and both from India... I'm Fusing all these different styles trying to make it one sound. 🕯️
