Not every century-old building is a ruin. Some are still alive.

Hidden within the streets of Sathyamangalam stands a 100-year-old Agraharam house, where four generations continue to live beneath the same roof. We had the privilege of documenting this living heritage as the first step towards its restoration.

Moving from the Thinnai into the Koodam, and through a sequence of Muttrams (courtyards), we experienced how the house breathes. Every courtyard draws in light, creates cross ventilation, and uses the stack effect to pull warm air upwards, keeping the interiors naturally cool. The low roof heights, thick load-bearing walls, bamboo and timber roof structure, country clay tiles, deep overhangs, and cool red oxide floors work together as one integrated passive cooling system.

Standing inside this home reminded us that the greatest sustainable buildings are often the ones that have quietly worked for a hundred years. Our responsibility now is not to modernize its character, but to carefully restore it—preserving its craftsmanship, respecting its wisdom, and ensuring that the stories it holds continue for generations to come.

How I Became an Architect. How I Got Into the Architect’s Lifestyle. Thank you sir for clarifying my vision towards architecture and creating many opportunities for me. Thank you sir for trusting me and giving me a podcast. Thank you for providing me with video clips.#architecture #architecturaldesign #architect #architectlifestyle
Our latest educational campus proposal emerged through dialogue, critique, experimentation, and collaboration—bringing together perspectives across the studio into a shared vision for learning, community, and the future.

Over weeks of discussion and exploration, we worked day and night—questioning, sketching, presenting, challenging, and refining ideas together. From interns to senior architects, from young designers to principal architects, every voice found space in the conversation.

One of the values we deeply embrace at Murali Architects is that good design does not belong to hierarchy—it belongs to exchange. Titles stayed outside the discussion room; curiosity, critique, and imagination took their place.

Through countless iterations, we explored multiple directions, tested different architectural languages, studied varied spatial experiences, and developed concepts across scales and approaches. Every option became an opportunity to ask deeper questions: How should learning feel? How can architecture build community? What environments encourage growth, interaction, and belonging?

What emerged was not a singular idea imposed from above, but a proposal shaped collectively—layer by layer, conversation by conversation.

At Murali Architects, every project is built through many minds working toward one vision. This proposal stands as a reflection of that process: collaborative, rigorous, and driven by the belief that the strongest architecture is created together.

A Decade later
Revisiting a project

Project: Suresh Blue beach

A hanging wall that guides, not divides.
Walls that define spaces, voids that connect them.
Formal and informal living in constant dialogue.
Light-filled interiors, minimal heat gain, and serene sit-outs immersed in landscape.

A decade later, this residence continues to remind us that timeless architecture is not about trends—it’s about creating spaces that age gracefully.

Proposed contemporary office building in Chennai that explores structural engineering through an expressive X-frame façade and bold cantilevered volumes. The exposed structural system enhances lateral stability, creates flexible workspaces, and establishes a distinctive architectural identity through the integration of structure and architecture. The project also incorporates efficient construction methodologies to enable faster execution and optimized project delivery.
