I initially resisted the latest internet craze, which involves looking back a decade ago to 2016. But then, seeing all your pictures I became curious about what exactly I was doing back then too. Turns out, much of the same.

I was traveling, biking, hiking, reading, writing, qnd spending time with friends. I was on Bazzo TV and City Life, hosting on CJAD, back when it actually had a few left-leaning voices, and writing for a bunch of different publications as a freelance journalist.

It was an interesting year. Leonard Cohen died and the Montreal Police were on strike, walking around looking like weirdos in their mom jeans or crazy leopard tights. It was a more innocent time. Before the pandemic and before Trump — and a million other world events —kept us up at night.

I’m currently writing on the lack of second-stage shelters for victims of gender-based violence in Quebec, and I’m realizing that four women have already died before I even finish writing it.

This is a fucking tragedy and an epidemic of violence and we continue to minimize it as “a dispute degenerating” or someone “accidentally pushing someone off a balcony.”

As if we don’t already know how this story goes and who ends up dead every single time. Women; that’s who. 💔

As much as winter has never been my favourite season, Quebec winters make me happy. The trick is to stay active and play outside as often as you can. ❄️❄️❄️

Like so many children of immigrants, Fabrice lives that in-limbo experience, caught between his parents’ and community’s expectations and his own dreams and desires. Like so many of us, he eventually makes it a source of strength and multiple perspectives.

As the daughter of immigrants myself, there was a lot that I related to in his story. The pressure that immigrant parents put on their kids to be a perfect representation of their community, the expectation to excel in highly valued professions that will ensure respect and security. Where we differ, is that I suspect the author initially suffered a little bit more from the people-pleasing urge than I ever did (hence the Bon Gason book title), which never really serves us anyway.

Of course, growing up as a Haitian man in Montreal he experiences a level of micro-agressions and racism that I’ve never had to deal with. I appreciated reading that perspective.

What I particularly found a value about his book is that Fabrice does a really good job of documenting the contrast between his years in private school and the elitism that it creates, while pointing out the social inequality that prevents others from attaining academic and social success. Unlike many in the private school pipeline who go straight into boardrooms and Quebec’s national assembly, completely unaware of the privilege that allows them to do so effortlessly, he’s aware of the doors that social privilege opens, which doesn’t always have to do with personal merit. An informative read that, as usual, the people who should read it, probably won’t.

PS. Shout-out to Place Versailles, a mall l, too, spent years in as a kid. Because, despite the stereotypes, one could find Greeks east of Saint-Laurent and most definitely in Hochelaga.

The McGill women’s rugby team is currently fighting for its life, fundraising in a last-ditch effort to save the 2026-27 season, after government cuts to Quebec’s higher education institutions have forced universities to slash where they can.

Inevitably, Quebec-student athletes, coaching, and support staff, and probably down the road, university facilities have been affected.

Shortsighted cuts could also spell trouble for national calibre athletes, who historically have relied on university facilities and expertise for training. Our university institutions have long served as pipelines for Canadian national and Olympic athletes and cuts like these will inevitably affect provincial and national athletic development.

All things absolutely not being equal for women’s sports, these consequences irk me the most for these teams. The Martlets’ fundraiser ends this Sunday. Feel free to share with friends and contribute if you feel inclined.

You know how you walk by buildings, public art or murals you’re momentarily intrigued by but are in a hurry and don’t have the time to stop?

I must’ve walked by this mural so many times on my way to my doctor’s and yet today, early for an appointment and enjoying the morning snowfall, I decided to stop and finally find out who she is. It turns out Ethel Stark was pretty cool. 🎻🎻

Mural by

My gratitude to for the many gorgeous and meaningful murals in our city.

According to the internet:

Ethel Stark was a trailblazing Canadian musician — a violinist, conductor, and teacher — born in Montreal, Quebec on August 25, 1910.

In 1940, at age 29, Stark co-founded the Montreal Women’s Symphony Orchestra (MWSO), Canada’s first all-women symphony orchestra, and served as its conductor until the late 1960s.

Stark was a pioneering woman conductor at a time when orchestras were overwhelmingly male.

Ethel Stark wasn’t just an accomplished violinist — she broke barriers for women in an era when conducting and professional ensemble work were largely closed to them, and she helped reshape Canadian musical culture by creating space for women to lead and perform at the highest levels.

Sorry, not sorry.

François Legault is responsible for some of the most divisive, xenophobic, and parochial legislation Quebec has seen in a very long time. He systematically targeted immigrants, minority language and religious rights in the province, and led a government that preemptively and repeatedly used the notwithstanding clause to suppress dissent and violate individual rights.

And it’s not like his fiscal management is worth praising either. Eight years ago he promised a better economy, better education, and better healthcare. I’m still waiting. The province also had a substantial surplus when he became premier and we all know what happened to that.

So, so long, goodbye, adieu, adios. If, au Québec, c’est comme ça qu’on vit under Legault’s leadership, I need to believe we can vit better without him.

There are few things I love more than breathing in fresh air. Walking, hiking, biking, paddling, skiing… I’m here for it! A simple walk in the woods (and there are sooo many trails in and around Montreal!!) makes my heart happy. 💚💚💚

Especially when it concludes with a stop at for a couple of steamés and their real-deal fries. 😋😋

Yin and Yang. ☯️☯️

My latest is a strange ode to my love of pop culture and history, and a look at current geopolitical events. I wrestled with the headline. I initially wanted to propose ‘From Stranger Things to Predictable Things,” because when it comes to American imperialism so much of what is happening is sadly predictable.

You can read the column online or in today’s paper.
