Loving the extra space in the scullery and not having to do acrobatics to avoid it in the photos!

I think it’s human nature to remember the negatives more clearly - I’ve really had to think about these positive ones 😆
In response to all the comments on my previous post about getting new friends, most of that negativity in the post was from people no longer in my life.
The worst comments were from an old acquaintance who was very competitive and insecure, and I can now see she didn’t like me buying my first house before she did.
She was even more evil when I got married, which was the trigger for me to tell her where to go! 👋 I could write a good book about this person!

When I started this journey in 2004 aged 24 painting your walls darker than a dirty white was seen as radical!
These comments relate to the rooms shown in the pics at the time.
My favourites:
😤’Me and my dad have been talking, we agree you’ve taken this too far,’ said the ‘friend’ as we were eating a takeaway I bought for her after I painted the parlour green and put up a few antique fittings. 🎵If you can see me now🎵
😡’I just want to put it all in a black bin bag’, said the same ‘friend’ as she arrived for a Christmas dinner party for her and her boyfriend.
’The previous owners kept such a nice garden’, sighed the neighbour after we ripped out tonnes of paving slabs, weeds and bramble and created our cottage garden.
I’ve learnt just do what you want with your house and don’t listen to the unhelpful noise.
If your friends are being very negative about your design choices they probably aren’t really your friends - I learnt this the hard way.
The irony is these people are desperate for you to praise their home improvements! 😂
I’d love to hear your experiences!

Cleaning brass is the worst aspect - it takes nearly three hours to polish every item throughout the house every six weeks! And then I have to clean the white brasso stains around the door knobs etc. Most brass items are in the two living rooms - brass was more widespread in posher houses.
💔 Breaking a valuable or irreplaceable antique is truly heartbreaking - I can visualise all my breakages as I write this! I always think that item survived for 100 years and it broke on my watch! The guilt.
🧹Dusting ornaments in the parlour is a chore that I now have system to do quickly and safely. However, it is a myth that a working class Victorian home would had clutter everywhere for this reason.
⚠️When you have delicate and rare items like my parlour carpet you can’t walk over it like any other floor. Items like these need to be covered and have limited use to reduce deterioration.
What are your drawbacks of living in the past?
The best things are:
💪There is no pressure to have the latest £30k kitchen to keep up with your friends. All kitchens start to look dated after 10 years - I embrace that my kitchen will never be back in fashion!
♻️Most things in my house are over 100 years old and are in their original state. No need for upcycling. I find it ironic when some people lecture about the environment and everything in their house is brand new!
❤️🩹Imperfection such as cracked floor tiles and paintwork chips add character to an old house, unlike in a modern interior where any damage screams scruffiness and needs rectifying.
🔪I shudder when I see these huge modern kitchens with a million cupboards - the cleaning must be immense! Most of my kitchen stuff is stored away in a pantry and a couple of cupboards. I find endless cupboards encourages you to buy more stuff and not limit yourself to what you really need.
If you live in a time warp, what are your benefits?
The drawbacks are to follow…

Key features include:
🔥the fireplace mantle was a handy place for tea tins, chamber candle sticks to guide you to bed, and spill holders for lighting fires and gas lights.
☕️Food and a lot of kitchen equipment was stored in the pantry and scullery, but an alcove cupboard was vital for housing your plates and cups
🐕Whilst ornaments were kept to a minimum to reduce cleaning, a pair of Staffordshire dogs on the mantle was standard.
🔪A scrubbed pine top table was the only food preparation area in this room and also served as the house’s everyday dining table.
🧽Varnished sanitary wallpaper with a tile or wood panelling design was a practical washable choice in a room where the range and gaslights were lit most days.

🪑Furniture was usually pine and painted a light colour or scumbled to look like a better wood (sometimes quite crudely!).
🖼️Pictures were often scripture prints from Sunday schools or sentimental scenes in small plain frames.
🛏️Patchwork quilts were a common feature, especially those made of floral cottons.
🚪Woodwork was painted in light colours such as off-white, cream, or light green or pink. Sometimes the door was painted a darker but similar colour.
🌸Wallpapers usually depicted dainty florals- larger, busier patterns were the reserve of parlours.

I try and kit out some of my storage areas with period pieces to bring the house to life and give it that authentic feel.

Taking you back to 1900 with the help of who we had the pleasure of working with to restore and produce three glorious wallpapers for his Victorian Cottage restoration.
Using fragments of the wallpapers found, these papers were redrawn and printed bringing them back to life and hung in their rightful home in the Chapel Street Cottage.
Victorian authenticity at its finest, perfect for period dramas or a project wanting to capture the era through pattern. Custom papers available, discover more at
