The first time visited the site in Tamworth, it was during a drought. Dry ground, dusty air and a few yellow plants barely holding on. That visit shaped every decision that followed.

House in the Dry sits on ex-grazing land outside Tamworth, designed to regenerate the land as much as to occupy it. Two sheds and a main house connect under a singular roof, forming a square around an almost totally enclosed central courtyard garden.

Metal, ironbark timber and stone on the exterior, chosen to be recessive against the foothills. Solar panels and extensive water capture prepare the house for the droughts that will come again.

Wedged behind a Victorian terrace on a corner of two quiet bluestone laneways in Carlton, Laneway House occupies what was once a backyard pocket.

To find it, you have to navigate a sequence of narrow back streets that feel like a remnant of Melbourne forgotten by most.

MRTN Architects principal Antony Martin describes the surrounding laneways as time capsules, layered with a bricolage of additions
spanning every decade since the early 1970s, each with their own idiosyncratic materials and logic. As he points out, it’s the neighbourhood in Melbourne that has experienced the oldest continuous waves of gentrification. And it is this rich, slightly hodgepodge context that shapes everything about the project.

A farmhouse that belongs to the land it sits on.

Replacing the original dwelling on a working sheep farm in Victoria’s West Gippsland, Shady Creek by is a home that earns its place in the landscape. Corrugated cladding and agricultural geometries pay quiet homage to the original sheds that remain on the property, while inside, the home offers a genuine retreat from the demands of farm life. Hardworking on the outside, sheltered and restorative within.

Instead of sliding doors to the floor we proposed a deep window threshold that doubles as a seat either inside or outside.
As an aside….
A good threshold always makes me think of when Odysseus throws off his beggar disguise and shoots Penelope’s suitors.
Not sure if that will happen in Carlton however.

HOMESTEAD HOUSE by · designed for a client with deep ties to farm life, Homestead House draws on the nostalgia of traditional rural homes · their materiality, roof forms and flowing plans.

Two offset corridors shape the layout, meeting at a dramatic double-height entry crafted from rammed earth and Spotted Gum, washed in light from a glazed skylight above.

Referencing the lone brick chimneys that remain on abandoned country properties, the home carries a quiet rural memory · grounded, familiar and deeply personal.

Set among the rolling hills of West Gippsland, Shady Creek Farm House by sits within the working fabric of a sheep farm, surrounded by paddocks and pale grey corrugated sheds. This everyday agricultural context shaped the home’s siting and form, allowing it to belong to the farm while creating a sanctuary within.

Clad in light grey corrugated iron with recessed openings that deepen shadow, the house reads as part of the shed landscape rather than apart from it. The result is a farmhouse designed for the stop-start rhythms of life on the land, balancing robust utility with a sense of calm and retreat.
