I was so encouraged to see NEA's president, Becky Pringle there! She is so encouraging! Kept it simple for us and talked about ways to engage the work in ways that honor our humanity. I'm thankful for her leadership. Thankful to be one of the thousands of educators that are part of her legacy. Fighting for more just schools will always be the right choice.
I don't want to miss opportunities to learn or experience something amazing.
I don't say yes to things I don't want to do, but there are so many things that I really am excited about that I've been able to do.
As I am getting closer to the end of my school year, my schedule is clearing up and my energy is coming back.
Summer me is loading!
Looking forward to the time to reconnect and recharge.
Here's to a healthy and happy year for each of you!
Life over here has been busy!
Doing so many amazing things in my classroom and local! Can't wait to share those stories with you!
Our political climate is still super challenging here, but there's some light at the end of the tunnel and maybe we're finally turning a corner!
Thankful for each of you and hoping this year gives you all you need to thrive!
Sending you love ❤️
Now, it takes me about an hour to get to work. I was determined to come in only for pre-plan and not a minute before. My first video is my classroom before I added anything to it. My second is what it looked like for meet the teacher. I had the lights low when families arrived and some soft jazz in the background.
Y'all, it was a vibe. ❤️💯
I wandered around the space talking to kids and parents. I smiled. I laughed.
Even after all these years, I still had that small voice that said, "Did you do enough?"
It doesn't matter that we had Meet the Teacher midweek.
That I would be given more time to complete my room and fully prepare for Monday.
I was still thinking...will people think I don't care because it doesn't look like "fill in the blank".
Looking back? I KNOW it was fine. Several parents asked me to snap a photo with their child. Many said they were so thankful to meet me. That they could tell I was just right for their child.
Y'all.
First impressions do matter.
You can certainly make one with decor, but...believe me when I tell you. If decor is all you got? By October, you will be re-evaluating your career choice. Authentic connection goes a long way to earning trust with kids and parents. Make sure you think about what you are communicating to your families verbally, non-verbally and optically in your space.
My space communicated clean, simple, organic.
My personally communicated warmth, empathy and genuine interest.
In my book? That is not just good enough.
It's honestly fantastic.
Y'all, we gotta get our own house in order.
Elementary folks: Looking at y'all....
What if I told you that kids can't read cause a lot of teachers in the past decade have put zero effort into learning about early literacy strategies that are grounded in evidence versus fun.
Kids will read if you learn how to be systematic & explicit.
Stop saying I teach K so, I'm not good at math. You're probably the reason some fourth graders don't understand how important it is to count on.
Stop saying I don't like writing...folks..it's a life skill...if you hate it? The kids will, too.
Some teachers talk a lot about be👏🏾hav👏🏾i👏🏾or, but their classroom management lacks cultural responsiveness and community. It's no wonder the kids stay acting out and not responding to people who can't stand them....with what? Empathy? Respect? Please.
I swear folks think when they become teachers this ish is organic.
I work hard at learning.
I read a ton.
I take professional learning and implement it in my room.
I track the progress of strategies.
Tighten up folks.
This season of teaching ain't for the faint or the folks in it for summers off and insurance bennies.
If you're going to be in teaching?
Be a learner first.
Stop blaming parents.
We are supposed to be the experts.
It's okay to know you're not there yet and work to grow.
It's not okay to never see your complicity.
Believe me...this pep talk is as much for me as it is for you.
We've got to get out of this spiral, and the only way up is together.
Florida is organizing in spite of the challenges.
I hope that where you are, you are finding hope, joy, and solidarity with like minded folks.
This work is best in community! ❤️💯💪🏾✊🏾
As a Florida public school teacher, one of the things that I am working on harder than ever is educating and animating our bargaining unit to greater organizing capacity. If we refuse to work together, we will suffer alone. As a Prentiss-Charney Fellow with I am deeply appreciative of the support I am given to continue to work towards better teaching and working conditions for our kids and my colleagues.
In your area, how are you mobilizing towards justice?💪🏾✊🏾
"Why Teachers Should Organize"
An excerpt from Teachers Unions and Social Justice from,, Michael Charney and Bob Peterson
One of the greatest honors of my career has been to advocate for the education professionals and students in Lake County Schools. Having a voice in what happens professionally in my daily role in a classroom but also in the way we address making forward progress in our state has made the back half of my career more resonant. The legacy I get to leave when I close the door on the classroom for the final time--hopefully a long time from now-- will be one with ZERO regrets. I continue to work at leaving it better than I found it and have the most hope that it will be with the collective efforts of my colleagues.
Being a teacher is still an amazing opportunity for folks who are invested in loving and leading the next generation while relentlessly pursuing personal and professional growth.
This snip is from a session on hard conversations and it's sitting with me deeply as I think of conversations across a number of different spectrums.
So thankful for this opportunity.
Truly.
