In his defence, Liverpool werenโt exactly screaming continental dominance. The early 2010s had been rough, with Suarez and Gerrard gone, even diehards like us were cautiously optimistic.
What he didnโt factor into his modelโฆ was.
As Liverpool progressed, his โcost-saving strategyโ became midnight drives across Hong Kong frantically searching for cha chaan tengs (่ถ้คๅปณ) showing 4am kick-offs โ half-awake, hoping for a TV and a seat.
These werenโt the safest hours at less welcoming neighborhoods, and I didnโt want him going alone. I was working late anyway, so I joined him โ and somehow those became some of our best father-son moments. Weโd fight for seats, guard them like trophies, then sit for hours before kick-off pretending this was all planned.
Then the game would startโฆ and it was worth it.
2017/18 was Moโs first season. 44 goals. Records falling. Defenders lost. And this certainty that no matter the chaos, heโd fix it. He made belief feel justified.
That front three with Manรฉ and Firmino? Pure chaos in the best way.
Also, Mo Salah is why I still hold a completely rational grudge against Real Madrid.
People used to call him a โone-season wonderโ โ perhaps in retrospect one of footballโs greatest comedy lines. Over nine years, he won everything: EPL, UCL, FA Cup, League Cup, Club World Cup โ plus countless individual awards.
He didnโt just bring Liverpool back. He brought us back.
Heโs why I made four trips to Anfield. Why I once stood outside Hope Street Hotel for six hours in 2019 for a three-second glimpse of him boarding the team bus. And I would totally do that again.
So when I got to photograph Liverpool on their Asia tour in Hong Kongโฆ it didnโt feel real.
Same player. Same aura. This time, through my viewfinder.
From waiting six hours for three secondsโฆ to capturing him frame by frame.
As this season ends, so does an era.
But players like Mo donโt leave. They become part of your story.

When my fellow Reds in Hong Kong found out that I was behind some of the shots featured in Liverpool's Hong Kong tour, it is only natural that a few of them would be envious of the possibility of close encounters with First Team players.
It is certainly true that being an ad hoc member of the Club's media team has given me privileges to inside training and even on the pitch that I could only dream of (indeed, many of my images were taken using a vintage 35mm film lens, which explained the distinct street & story-telling vibe that is distinct from conventional tele-lens sports photography).
However, even if you are just one meter away from Mo Salah, your professionalism meant you must always keep a respectable distance to your hero while you are on duty, whereas if I were only in the shoes of a fan, I would certainly have sought after an autograph and a selfie. Indeed, when one is so hyper-focused on creating a good image, your psyche is taken to a different place and at some point you even forget what the scoreline is.
So when Mark asked me what would be the top highlight of the tour, for me, it is never the possibility of close encounters (it is certainly an important highlight), but the fact that your work is valued, shared, and featured by the Club and its many players that you've loved all your life. When Virgil our Captain walked out of the tunnel, pointed his finger at you and said "Hey bro, good photos this morning, are you shooting this evening", that is when you are over the moon. This is when you know you are ready to give everything for the Club.
