The real challenge is deciding exactly when to warn the slower one.
At a new marshal post, that’s something you have to learn quickly. I look at how the cars exit the previous corner, how fast the gap is closing, what the previous flag post is doing and how the drivers are positioning themselves.
Because once they’re in front of me, it’s often too late.
Every lap is a constant cycle of spotting, judging and reacting, all while Hypercars, LMP2s and LMGT3s are approaching at incredible speeds.
Being able to identify the cars quickly is key here.
From the grandstands it looks like we’re just waving a flag.
Trackside, it’s hundreds of split-second decisions over the course of 24 hours.

Not quite.
For many drivers, today test day is what decides whether they can race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans at all.
If it’s their first Le Mans they must complete at least 10 laps, including 5 timed flying laps, before they’re allowed to take part in the race.
But that’s only part of it.
While fans may look at the lap times, teams are busy testing tyres, brakes, fuel consumption and reliability. Most aren’t even showing their true pace yet.
From a marshal’s perspective, it’s one of the most interesting days of the week. Drivers are getting back up to speed, teams are running completely different programmes and you’ll often see installation laps, pit entry practice and repeated runs with small setup changes.
For us it’s all about figuring it who’s who, identifying cars and different classes from a distance so we can use the right flag at the right moment.
So next time you watch Test Day, remember this.
It’s not about being fastest.
It’s about being ready for 24 hours of racing.
