Every museum has a story to tell, whether it’s about a particular region, event, culture, or theme. Through displaying and preserving significant objects, they educate the public and facilitate cultural exchange. By engaging with history, we establish context for the present and hold the potential to shape the future toward mutual understanding.
MTA is proud to have designed a number of museums across Ontario, a result of our mission to build inspiring and enduring spaces that transform communities and reinforce civic identity.
Happy International Museum Day!

Today, we’re celebrating efforts toward environmental protection and reflecting on the ways that we can serve our planet as architects.
With buildings being responsible for nearly 30% of greenhouse gases, we strive to design structures that minimize impact on the natural world and leave a place better than we found it.
We’re proud to have designed and constructed Lakehead University’s Simcoe Hall, the first LEED Platinum academic building in Canada. As the inaugural project to open on their new Orillia campus in 2010, the facility set a precedent for the integration of architecture and landscape, creating a green community where sustainability is part of every student’s education.
Committed to efficiency, performance, and conservation, MTA has also worked on the following LEED Gold buildings:
📍Surrey Civic Centre
📍Canon Canada HQ
📍University of British Columbia, Okanagan Commons
📍St. Francis Xavier University, Brian Mulroney Institute of Government
Conceived as a Canadian Centennial project, the interactive museum was commissioned by Ontario Premier John P. Robarts in 1964 as an investment in Canada’s science and technology education. With ever-changing exhibits, hands-on demonstrations, and an open invitation to explore questions through participation, the Ontario Science Centre cultivated a lasting spirit of curiosity and wonder in its visitors of all ages.
Its original site was located by the Don Valley, a sprawling ravine landscape with diverse flora and fauna in which the building was seamlessly integrated. As visitors travelled between exhibit halls, the beauty of the surrounding trees could be witnessed, a reminder that nature remains the basis of life, even as science and technology propel us into the future.

💬 What initially drew you to MTA?
What drew me here was that I had worked for 10 years for one firm, but it wasn’t very design-focused and I wanted to do more design work. I wanted to plant myself, stay in one spot, and make it a home for the rest of my career. Design was important, but equally important was the culture.
💬 What values guide your work?
Good design is something we don’t take for granted, no matter how large or small the project is. MTA places an importance on gaining the trust of the client, being reliable and honourable, and doing the right thing socially. We go the extra yard to weave stories and cultural elements into the work because we want each project to be unique. It’s less about us designing in a particular style, but rather finding the ethos of each client.
💬 Where do you gather inspiration?
Personally, I’ve always been influenced by music. To me, composing music is like composing a building. I’m drawn to songs with magical moments, where either lyrically or musically it says something powerful, and I think architecture needs those moments.
“We are deeply grateful for this recognition from our peers and from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. We carry a legacy of bold, passionate design from our founders, and we’re honoured to be recognized today, not for where we’ve come from, but for who we are now—a collective that continues to evolve and continues to push boundaries with courage in the pursuit of a more balanced and beautiful future.
We share this honour with every collaborator, from our clients and partners to the communities we work with, who believe, as we do, that purposeful design has agency to shape a better world for people and for planet.” - Carol Phillips, Partner

Going all-electric represents a commitment for institutions, campuses, and community buildings toward more responsible design and shaping a regenerative future. Beyond sustainability, here are some of the other benefits of our low-carbon, all-electric buildings:
🟢 Limberlost Place, George Brown College: Designed by with, featuring a natural ventilation system with two solar chimneys and operable windows throughout, the Limberlost Place operates comfortably in passive mode for four to five months of the year. Achieving a 54% savings in energy costs frees significant funding to go back to student-centered programs, activities, and amenities.
🟢 Rouge National Urban Park Visitor, Learning, and Community Centre: Through passive design strategies, including its distinctive canopy optimized for solar heat gain reduction, RNUP has achieved Zero Carbon Building - Design certification. Eliminating on-site fossil fuels improves air quality for visitors and surrounding communities, while celebrating the park's mission to connect Torontonians with nature.
🟢 Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) Headquarters: The OSSTF Headquarters is conditioned by a geo-exchange system and topped with PV panels that generate 17% of its energy demand. With excess power fed back into the grid, it prioritizes community impact beyond wellness and occupant comfort.

At Moriyama Teshima Architects, we use sculptural staircases as a way to enhance wayfinding, celebrate movement, and transform everyday circulation into memorable spatial experiences. In projects such as the Etihad Museum, Limberlost Place, OSSTF Headquarters, and Sheridan HMC2, feature stairs create spaces that promote wellness, encourage social encounters, and guide people naturally through the building.
Why take the elevator when the stairs are this beautiful?
