In an era where mass production dominates the cycling industry, the MMFG Aero stands as a rare testament to what’s possible when traditional craftsmanship meets cutting-edge materials. Handmade 100% in-house in Los Angeles, this carbon fiber frame wasn’t just another project—it was an experiment, a challenge, and ultimately, a statement.
The Vision: Can One Builder Do It All?
Most high-end carbon fiber bicycle frames are produced in large-scale factories with specialized teams handling every stage of production. The monocoque construction—a method used by the biggest names in racing bicycles—is virtually unheard of in the world of bespoke, handmade frames. But I wanted to see if it could be done in my own shop, using only the resources I had. Could a single builder create a top-tier carbon fiber frame from start to finish? Or is the lone frame builder forever confined to steel and titanium, stuck in the methods of the past?
The Process: A Labor of Passion and Precision
The MMFG Aero didn’t happen overnight. It took multiple iterations—each frame pushing the limits of my knowledge, tools, and patience. Every step, from mold-making to layup, curing, and finishing, was done in-house. Each setback was a lesson. Each refinement brought the vision closer to reality.
And now, there is one. Just one frame out in the wild, the culmination of countless hours of trial, error, and craftsmanship. It’s proof that monocoque carbon fiber isn’t exclusive to big brands and overseas factories. It’s proof that the future of handmade bespoke bicycles isn’t limited to metal.
Will There Be Another?
Honestly, I don’t know. It was an enormous amount of work. This wasn’t about launching a new product line or scaling up production. It was about proving to myself that it could be done. And now that I know it’s possible, I see the landscape of handmade bicycles differently.
Maybe the traditional frame builder isn’t stuck in the 20th century. Maybe the future of handmade bespoke bikes isn’t just bright—it’s wide open.
