- And also, if I may, I want to warn younger moms against all the distractions that you will face. 🙏 Some women may need to work but still make family their #1 priority. (That is hard and so admirable! 🙌🏼) But sometimes work (even “work from home”) can be a distraction from the high calling you have at home. (Trust me I know!) Also social opportunities, travel, fitness. self care trends… I think social media adds so much pressure for women to be doing all of the things all of the time, and this often means not being present for the family that really needs you.
Trust me as an almost empty-nester (with three grown sons ) when I say:you will never regret investing time into your kids while they’re growing up! You also will be glad to have a marriage that you’ve invested in when the kids are grown and gone! ❤️
So, keep doing the good and holy (and often mundane) work.. It’s OK if your real life doesn’t match social media highlight reels. ✨✨What matters is the hearts and lives you’re shaping!

Since my Dad’s passing / my extended time in Wa. I’ve felt a little “off” back home. With no urgent deadlines or travel I have found myself wandering around the house trying to figure out the best use of my (1-2 weeks?🤷♀️) of time before book edits come back. 🤓.
—> Of course there’s Levi’s school and golf and alllll the usual home and family stuff (people still want dinner every day! 🙃🤷♀️) (where do I even start with home projects? 😵💫) but I guess I function best with deadlines and to-do lists.

Anyways. (Sorry Dear Diary here! 😜) it was great to have Josiah in town last week, and we all enjoyed a chill Mother’s Day together. It’s been sweet to catch up with friends on walks, coffees, at the beach, and at a special grad party 🥳👩🎓
I think of my Dad many times every day and sometimes it makes me cry but mostly I smile thinking how incredibly blessed I’ve been to be his daughter, and how wonderful Heaven must be. I’m learning about grief. 😌
Luke has been all over the world lately (literally: Germany, Virginia, and now on to Tahiti!!) and Jonah and Taylor went on their 1st camping trip as a married couple 🥰(Yosemite! 🏔️) So I’m including a bit of everyone in this little photo recap.

Raising (and homeschooling) 4 sons has given me a front row seat to some serious sibling competition. -> Who can jump higher? eat more? lift heavier? grow taller?…there’s been a lot of competition in our home. 😅
Here are 3 things parents of competitive kids should keep in mind:
1. A competitive spirit is not a bad thing. It’s actually healthy, and God-given. we live in a competitive world, and kids can learn to compete well at home. —> Yet competition does need to be channeled well, and fostered within a spirit of love and humility. So, let kids compete - even have some conflict, and only intervene when necessary. 👍🏼Have clear rules against actually hurting one another — physically or verbally. Then step back and enjoy the show. 😉
2. Teach conflict resolution outside of the heat of the moment. Make sure to talk as a family about the importance of peacemaking: forgiving, owning your mistakes, and letting things go. Use role playing when kids are young, and help them understand that conflict will be a part of life, but how they handle it can make a world of difference. 💥 —> “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9
3. Give kids a vision for godliness. Teach kids to fear the Lord and encourage them to live out Romans 12:10: “Outdo one another in showing honor.” Tell them if they want to compete, compete in showing respect, kindness, and valuing their siblings above themselves. 🙏 If kids have a relationship with God, then everything else tends to fall into place underneath that.

One of the greatest gifts we can give our kids is good examples of people throughout history who have modeled strength of character in good and bad times. I want my kids to know that when times get hard (because they will 😌) - or if, heaven forbid, they face something tragic one day, they might recall others who have been in their shoes and made it through. 🙏🙌🏼.

Dave and I are from the Pacific Northwest (Dave is from McMinnville Or. and I am from Gig Harbor Wa.) After he finished medical school at OHSU (Portland) we moved to Oahu 23 years ago for Dave’s residency. I thought it would be a 3-year stay. We’re still here. 🥰
Dave now works at Pali Momi Hospital as a hospitalist. He is an incredible doctor who gives the very best care to a lot of people who are facing the very worst of circumstances… 🥹 ❤️ He’s also a great hobby farmer - growing tropical fruits and raising 🐓 and taking care of our property. He’s the best surf and golf dad and loving leader of our home. 🙌🏼💪🏼💙
I have homeschooled all of our boys and Josiah is now a college grad living in Santa Barbara, California. He is a lot like Jesus, and is…truly amazing. (I’m tagging the boys so you can check out their feeds.)
Jonah is a Sr. at Westmont College studying engineering. He is gifted at guitar and is faithful & patient and smart and has so much ahead of him! ✨
Luke is a professional surfer doing college online. He spends much of the year traveling the 🌎 for surf. He is funny and hard-working and just a joy. 😁
Levi is 13 and in 8th grade. He took up golfing a couple years ago and is well on his way to a great career (or at least an expensive hobby, ha ha.) he is a critical thinker and gladly fills the comedian role as the youngest of the family. 😆
I proudly wear the title of stay-at-home-mom/teacher. When I turned 40 I started a blog and one thing led to the next, and now at 53 I have a Podcast and my 3rd published book will come out this spring. It’s called “Becoming Homeschoolers” and it has been one of the most fun projects of my life (more about that soon!)
