the creamiest homemade Hokkaido milk shaved ice 🍨💛🥛zero fancy equipment needed~

I’ve been craving bingsoo lately, but i dont want to spend $17-$20 each time or buy a shaved ice maker, soooo I finally found a way to make it at home~ just 3 ingredients!!

I kept seeing people freeze fruit like watermelon or mango and grate it into shaved ice. but I wanted something creamier, more like actual bingsoo. so I thought… can I just freeze the milk instead???
turns out YOU CAN!!

I’m thinking of doing a Anko (red bean) and kinako + mochi one next, or a classic strawberry one OR what if I add matcha or coffee to the milk before freezing it? and then shaving it?? let me try it and seeee if it works!

Ep 20~ the most memorable takoyaki I’ve had so far in Toronto! It’s been hard to find authentic, crispy, freshly made takoyaki in toronto. But I’m so glad to have finally visited in Kensington market.

The flavors were very nostalgic, and I don’t know anywhere else downtown where you can get freshly made takoyaki like this.

The takoyaki was not the only item that was delicious. Their yakisoba had that smoky, nostalgic flavor, and the wafu chicken katsu Bao was 🤩🤩🤩! So much flavour packed into that thing! I want to go back to try their curry and other bao flavors too now~

Kaori-san (the owner) is such a lovely person! She is so downto earth and genuine. I hope you also get to meet her when you visit!

She’s a single mom and had been working in the restaurant industry for nearly 20 years. But the dream of opening her own takoyaki spot had been sitting quietly in the back of her mind for a long time as she faced the demands of working in restaurants and later raising a child, so she just never had the right moment, until she was given the chance to do a small pop up. But then covid hit, but she didnt give up and rented a space from a jamaican restaurant on her day off to run weekly pop-ups every Monday for 6 months. “We kept everything socially distanced, but it gave me the chance to keep going and build something real.” And in 2021, she opened her own shop!!

I also asked her “why takoyaki!?” and she said it was because of 2 reasons.

1. she thought it would be a new experience for canadians to see it being made, just like we grew up watching at festivals, AND
2. her close friend’s father had a takoyaki stand, which he started on a whim but he passed away not long after. So she wanted to keep his legacy and his recipe actually became the foundation of hers.

“I wouldn’t call myself a “chef” in the traditional sense, but what I really want is to share Japanese street food- and a bit of fusion, without making it too expensive with people living in Canada. At the same time, I hope it brings a sense of nostalgia to Japanese people, reminding them of home.” - Kaori

Ep 19~ Toronto’s katsu scene hasn’t really wowed me or won me over. I’ve had quite a bit of katsu here that’s teeeechnicallyy fine but doesn’t feel like the REAL Japan quality katsu. It’s often too heavy, too greasy, breading is too thick and nothing saku saku about it. but thisss one was different!! The owners might not be Japanese, but the respect and care behind the food felt incredibly authentic to me~

The price did catch me off guard a little - but once I had it and the more I thought about it, the more it made sense because you’re not paying for a cheap fry. You’re paying for the quality of the pork, the way it’s breaded, the way it’s cooked~ and I still go back because I think it’s genuinely worth it and something I can’t recreate at home!

Their katsu curry also smelt soooo incredible, so I will be going back to try that one too!! If you’ve had it let me know what you thought/if it’s worth trying🍛

*I also just wanted to say that my goal with this series is simply just to share and celebrate places that feel authentic to “me” and remind me of Japan! That being said, food is personal, and what’s ‘worth it’ for one person might not be for another. I’m just here to share my honest experiences so you can decide for yourself!!

Thank you for all the recommendations in the last 18 videos!!! Please keep sharing your favorites so we can all discover more places together and make this series even more helpful for everyone 🤍🤍

one of my FAVORITE dishes she made for us growing up!! This is her oven-baked teriyaki chicken + a side of spinach goma-ae 🇯🇵🥬🍗 so happy I finally have the recipe on record and I can make it myself 🤪

Teriyaki (照り焼き) comes from the words teri (照り), meaning “shine” or “glaze,” and yaki (焼き), meaning “grilled” or “cooked.”

Traditionally in Japan, “teriyaki”actually referred to fish brushed with a soy sauce–based glaze and grilled. But then CHICKEN teriyaki became especially popular in home cooking because it was affordable, filling, and easy to make in large portions~

I think many families, like mine, have their own twist to the recipie, and adding ketchup is actually a very common home-style adaptation in Japan 🥫🍅🍝
