Amber Manthorne and I were glued together through high school and in our early 20s, and we lived together. We went separate ways because of different life choices, but my love for her will always run deep and seeing what has happened to her is beyond heartbreaking. It's been almost a week, her car was found abandoned, search and rescue has no leads, and hope is waning.
If anything can be gained from this, it's wisdom for those in domestic abuse situations.
1. You can leave. There is help in Canada. There are shelters, there are options. Yes it's hard, but staying is harder and more dangerous.
2. You will not disappoint anyone if you stop trying to make an abusive relationship work. Your family and friends will understand and if they don't, it's a clear sign you don't need them in your life.
3. Leaving isn't a personal failure. Not making the relationship work is not a personal failure. These guys are professionals at what they do, you are stronger than you think.
4. If you have to start over in life, that's okay. It's better to have your life and walk away, than to stay and risk your life.
5. If he's done it once, he WILL do it again. All the gifts and apologies mean nothing, they are brought to you as a result of narcissism and plotting.
