ReFramed
Melbourne Design Week ( MAY 14 — 24 )

An exploration of design that resists fixed meaning, our exhibition brings together key works from Cappellini in a setting that shifts their context and repositions their intent. Across decades of experimentation, these pieces continue to speak in different ways, shaped as much by where they are seen as when they were made.

ReFramed is a quiet invitation to step inside, slow down, and look again.

Open

The Lud’O collection reflects Patricia Urquiola’s softer and more expressive approach to contemporary furniture, combining generous upholstery with sculptural form and strong architectural balance. Designed during a period increasingly focused on emotional comfort and relaxed living, the armchair introduces warmth and tactility through rounded volumes, layered materials, and an inviting lounge-like silhouette.
Created during the late 1980s, the Thinking Man’s Chair reflects Jasper Morrison’s early move away from expressive postmodern design toward a quieter, more functional approach. Rather than relying on decorative gestures, the piece focuses on proportion, comfort, and clarity of structure, with its exposed frame giving the chair an almost skeletal lightness. It became an important early example of Morrison’s “super normal” philosophy, creating objects that feel timeless through simplicity and restraint.
Emerging during the early 1990s, the Felt Chair became one of Marc Newson’s most recognisable works and helped establish his international reputation for fluid, futuristic forms. Combining sculptural curves with an unusually soft, seamless surface treatment, the chair reflected a period when contemporary design was becoming increasingly experimental in both materiality and form. Its dramatic reclining silhouette sits somewhere between furniture, object, and transport design — a balance that would come to define much of Newson’s career.
Released at the end of the 1990s, the Big Shadow Lamp captures Marcel Wanders’ ability to turn familiar domestic objects into playful sculptural statements. Enlarging the traditional fabric lampshade to monumental scale, the design balances theatricality with softness, creating a warm ambient presence rather than a purely functional light source. The piece became emblematic of the more emotional and expressive direction emerging within contemporary European design at the time.
