Do you ever get anxious you're not making enough money? Obvs if we're struggling to pay bills or meet baseline needs, then stress and emotional heft makes sense. But for a lot of us, we spin easily beyond just what we need. And as gay people, there's a reason it's not uncommon for us to over identify with our income and earning potential and still doubt if it's ever enough. If that sounds like you, then YOU'RE GAY! HAH! GOTCHA! 🚨 πŸ•΅πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ
Losing a close friendship is really painful when we understand the conflicts that got us there. But losing a close friendship without any acknowledgement as to why can create some suffering when our imaginations run wild. Oh the deep, historical mishegas that gets activated in us by a trigger like that is....something. The good news is that it's a chance to check whatever trauma cycle loops we spin in any time we experience abandonment like that. Like Maya Angelou said, "When you know better, you do better." And when we acknowledge pain and let it pass through us without needing to immediately discharge it, then we depersonalize, integrate, and close the loop and move closer to more secure attachments. Let the ghosts go...with love of course. πŸ‘»
As a client recently said to me, "I just wanna live in precedented times again." There's a lot to stay aware of and unless we're in the throes of being abused or near someone who is, we can't let it consume more than we have to give. And for us gays, our trauma gets activated easily overwhelming our nervous systems and can potentially render us even less effective to any cause. So we gotta check in realistically with what gets triggered (if anything) and attend to that internally first and then we give what we have to give. We don't all have the same experiences and operating system so you gotta listen to your own body before you can find and use your voice. Anything else is ineffective and primes us for burnout. 🫢🏼
Judging ourselves as "lazy" is an easy way for our brains to fill in the blank when we otherwise struggle to identify and attend to a deeper emotional need. Either we're burnt out and need some love without having to earn it through a ridiculous standard of constant achievement of things that don't really matter OR we need reassurance that it's normal to feel fear and resistance when gearing up to do anything that deeply does. And especially as gay men, we're taught to feel valuable through our productivity and safe through avoiding any real expression of our hearts. So yeah, "lazy" is a convenient way for homophobia to keep us down. Nothing a little gentleness and emotional vulnerability can't heal πŸ€ΈπŸ»β€β™‚οΈ
Decade of gratitudeeee ✨
✨2016 Highlights✨
Growing up gay and the adaptive need to be hyper aware of both our surroundings and how we act was a way to control what we revealed about ourselves to stay safe. It also helped create a superpower of laser like focus and a really precise way to express ourselves. But if even after coming out we still struggling to name and attend to the deeper parts of us that still need healing, then we might use that skill to avoid the pain and project a different image we think others will like. But if we otherwise become aware of the sneaky, covert ways angst can show up, then we can harness that power for good and lean into more intuitive and authentic ways of creating and expressing real beauty in our lives. And now THAT'S the aesthetic I'm talking abouttttt πŸ€©πŸ’…πŸΌ
Fight, flight, freeze, or {GAY} FAWN πŸ’… 🦌 Thoughtfulness and attentiveness are great traits, but they can also function as a defense to win over people we maybe feel anxious or insecure around. And when we grow up gay, we can learn to fearfully cater to everyone else's needs just to secure a seat at the table. Yet if we're in survival mode, how do we know we're even sitting at the right one then? Fawning is a tricky one to name because it seems so pleasant and helpful on the surface and no one's gonna complain about it. But as long as we're acting out from trauma, we stay on the surface and miss the opportunity to attend to the deeper part of us that needs the most love and healing so we can find new calm and the right table.
The survival mechanism in our brain does an INCREDIBLE job at tricking us when we do any new things because it just wants us to give up and go back to the status quo of what’s familiar to keep us safe. But when we want to thrive, we gotta call it out in all of it’s distorted glory, thank it, but then keep taking each baby step forward anyway until we create a new normal and see a stronger, more evolved image staring back at us. #therapy #pottery #psychology #wheelgoodtherapy #wgt
This is why we DO say gay. Of course we want to positively effect change in the world around us and dismantle oppressive systems through accountability, but it can be even more effective when we *ONLY IN A SAFE CONTEXT* also include our emotional need and personal story. And even though we can’t guarantee it will change the minds or hearts of anyone around us, we can count on it strengthening our own in our inner world. GAYGAYGAYGAYGAY. QUEERQUEERQUEERQUEER. β€οΈπŸ§‘πŸ’›πŸ’šπŸ’™πŸ’œπŸ€πŸ€ŽπŸ–€πŸ’–πŸ€πŸ’™
