We are excited to partner with and to present the first North American run of DISTANT VOICES (2024), the brand new feature film from Takashi Ito (b. 1956). Ito has been a crucial figure in the history of avant-garde film for many decades, constructing evocative and haunted short films that bridge the everyday with the otherworldly.
Painstakingly edited, his works were initially influenced by his mentor, Toshio Matsumoto, while he was a student at the Kyūshū Institute of Design. In 1984, he explained that film is able to construct a “vivid reality” that is specific to the medium itself, and that his primary goal is “draw the audience into a vortex of supernatural illusion.” His newest film DISTANT VOICES follows suit, and is in line with his recent trajectory of experimenting with creating longform digital works. The film follows two girls engaging in some magical form of communication—both with and through each other—across various liminal spaces. “A field of wilted sunflowers, a group of public housing units turned into ruins. Two girls who are like alter egos of each other. They wander around with a camera, one pointing it at mysterious things and at herself, the other hanging a black dress in various places and taking pictures of it.
Critic and curator Joshua Minsoo Kim of Tone Glow will be present to introduce the film.
Celluloid Now is one of the great showcases of experimental films in Chicago, and I wrote about it during its inaugural year in 2022, also for the Reader. I’m thrilled to be writing about it again for their third edition, as it lines up nicely with the Korean experimental works I’ve been championing in my own programming recently—a selection of Seoungho Cho’s video art for Prismatic Ground in New York, a touring program of contemporary Korean films around the US called Rotating Signals. And it’s especially exciting to highlight a program that’ll feature actual film prints; it’s an understatement to say this screening is one of the most essential of the year. It takes place at the on Sunday, October 12th.
As an addendum to the piece, I created a list of 25 Korean experimental films that can shed some light on its specific history. There’s not really much in the way of a canon for this sort of stuff, so I wanted to make something like that for others to see, though I’ve not included anything already showing in the Celluloid City Seoul program. I also kept it to one per director. What can I say, I love making lists.
Film Stills:
• The Dark Room (Minyong Jang, 2001)
• Study for Three Streams (Park Kyujae, 2024)
• Chang Gyeong (Jangwook Lee, 2024)
• (100ft) (Minjung Kim, 2016)
• Tide (Jang Eunju, 2007)
Also, this is very obviously the best “Best Rap Albums” list from a major publication in the last decade. Nothing else comes close, so it feels real nice to be a part of it.
Les Blank (1935-2013) was an American documentary filmmaker whose works took a congenial and crucial look into various American musicians, cultures, and scenes. Naturally, food is a focus of some of his films, and we will be showing 1980’s ‘Garlic is As Good as Ten Mothers’ (Short Version) and 1990’s ‘Yum, Yum, Yum! A Taste of the Cajun and Creole Cooking of Louisiana’, which was made with Maureen Gosling. Blank once said, “Food is sensual. It keeps bodies alive and people together.”
Lua Borges is a Chicago-based filmmaker originally from Brazil who works with the analog medium to capture the ephemera and interiority of everyday life. Three of her films will be shown, all of which will be premieres on new prints. This includes 2020’s ‘Dois Estágios’, a documentary that explores the beginning and end of a bloodline, starting in the urban of São Paulo where she was raised, and then ending on the country farm where her grandparents spend their golden years. The film delves into the personal and shared history of her Brazilian family. ‘Guarita’ & ‘Desire Path’, both from 2025, will also be shown. These are one-roll collage films of guard houses in São Paulo and desire paths along Chicago, respectively. Tone Glow commissioned Borges to make a film for this screening and the result was ‘Desire Path’.
