Welcome to the 12 month sleep regression!
This “12 months sleep regression” often manifests as nap strikes, resisting bedtime and waking throughout the night (sometimes for hours on end.)
The good news is that sleep regressions are temporary and your 12-month-old should go back to sleeping well in 1-2 weeks.
A 12-month-old baby needs:
😴 13 - 14 hours of total sleep in 24 hours period
😴 11 - 12 hours of uninterrupted night sleep
😴 2 - 2.5 hours of total nap across two naps
Have you gone through the 12 month sleep regression? let us know in the comments below ⬇️
They just can’t see how it’ll happen. How on earth will their baby fall asleep on their own independently?
Your baby isn’t a unicorn.
Their sleep can be transformed quickly within days!!
All you need is the strategy plan that’s tailored for your baby, your parenting style and the support to see it through. I’m proud of this family what they have achieved within 2 weeks 💃🏻
5 months old baby Leena
Mum was feeling exhausted from rocking to sleep cosleeping, nap trapped with a serial cat napper all the time at home, stressed of going out as she was unsure when baby Leena is due for naps. The mum needs to return to work and she knew this wasn’t sustainable for her long term. This family booked for an in-home consultation.
Fast forward 2 weeks
✅ Baby Leena is a little champ who self settled
✅ Naps like a nap queen 1.5-2 hours long lunch nap in her cot
✅Established a predictable 3 naps routine
✅Self settled independently in daycare
✅Sleeping through the night 11-11.5 hours consistently with 0 -1 night feed
When I support your family - we aren’t just focussing on transforming ‘sleep’. We are focussing on transforming all of the puzzles that it can impact when sleep isn’t going well for your family.

...When your little one is so cranky, clingy fussy, screaming, that you want to pull your hair out? 😭
Most babies will let you know they’ve been awake too long because they’ll become fussy and difficult to soothe.
I found that happy contented babies will sometimes throw us a curve ball by hiding the fact that they are overtired by remaining calm and happy even when they’ve been up for a very long time.
Let's dive into the LAST maximum awake windows before bedtime :
🌙 Newborn - 1 hr
🌙 3 months - 1.5 hours
🌙 4 months - 2 hours
🌙 5 months - 2 hours
🌙 6 months (3 naps ) - 2 hours
🌙 6 months (2 naps) - 4 hours
🌙 7-12 months - 4 hours
🌙 13-18 months - 4.5 hours
🌙 18 months - 2 yrs - 5 hours
🌙 2-3 yrs - 5.5 hours
Protest Cry VS Emotional Cry 😭
Even though your baby can't talk, they are capable of giving you some clues to help you understand what they are communicating.
🌙 Protest Cry:
It has broken and varies in pitch eg waaaa, pause, waaaa, wa, pause, wa. The cry can also change in volume up and down with pauses in between.
I know it is heartbreaking to listen to your baby’s crying. Nobody enjoys hearing a baby cry. When you hear this type of crying with high pitch and pauses, take a deep breath. Your baby is fine, it is healthy normal communication from your baby to you that he/she is frustrated.
You can go to cuddle your baby and stroke his back or head to give extra comfort. If your baby stops crying as soon as you pick him up then it was a protest cry.
I often see this protest crying in babies when we are changing the way your baby falls asleep (rocking, patting, feeding to sleep).
I do NOT encourage your baby to cry it out but I always encourage mums to know that babies can express their expressions in crying regardless of how gentle the changes are.
🌙 Emotional cry:
An emotional cry is the same sound and has no pauses in between the cries. It is like wa, wa, wa, wa, wa, wa, wa except maybe little gaps to take a breath.
I would strongly suggest that you comfort your baby if you hear this type of cry. Go to pick them up and cuddle. Then check for a few reasons why your baby is crying. Sometimes it can be a wet dirty nappy, cold, hunger, colic, or illness. If your baby is emotionally crying, he/she usually won’t stop as soon as you pick him/her up. It takes your love, patience, and cuddles to soothe them.
What I can offer is my holistic sleep approach, which often results in fewer tears. Sleep coaching is like the last piece of a puzzle. When every puzzle piece is in place, your baby can learn to sleep independently 💤

As parents, we’re wired to respond when our babies cry. We jump into action with different soothing methods like breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact, soothing sounds or gentle movement to calm a baby who’s upset.
But what happens when your baby suddenly screams or cries in distress in the middle of the night while they are still asleep?
With our parental instincts kicking in, some may worry that something is very wrong, and rightly so. However, in most cases, for babies, crying while asleep is a phase rather than a sign of a serious problem.
Some reasons why babies cry in their sleep:
💤 Crying while drifting between sleep cycles -
Many babies will experience a brief awakening at the end of each sleep cycle. During this brief awakening, babies may cry for a few minutes and put themselves back to sleep or may not even fully awaken.
💤 Crying due to brain development -
Your baby might just have a lot of brain development going on as they progress mentally. As strange as it sounds, these mental leaps can make your baby more unsettled for a while and cause crying and sleep regression.
💤 Crying due to over-tiredness -
When your little one is overtired, the fatigue fighting hormone can make it even more challenging for babies to fall and stay asleep soundly. Over-tiredness can also be a sign of the witching hour. Over-tiredness and big tears just before falling to sleep are the most common reasons your baby may be crying in their sleep.
💤 Crying due to teething pain -
If you suspect your baby may be working on a new tooth, you might notice more frequent mild crying or whimpering while sleeping.
💤 Crying due to discomfort -
Babies can cry if they are hungry, cold or too hot. Persistent crying may be the first sign of a more serious illness (like an ear infection).
💤 Crying due to night terrors -
Toddlers and older babies may cry while asleep if they're having night terrors. Night terrors are more likely to occur early in the night and when a child is sick or sleep-deprived.

🍼 0-3 months - feeds on demand every 2-3 hours
🍼 4-6 months - 2 feeds with each feed minimal 4 hours apart
🍼 7-9 months - 1 feed after midnight or 2 feeds with each feed minimal 4 hours apart
🍼 10-12 months - 0 feed or 1 feed after midnight
🍼 12+ months - no feeding
All of the information above is general guidelines for healthy babies who are gaining weight properly with no other medical concerns.
Your baby may have a different sleep and feeding pattern from others based on unique factors. Still, if you have any doubts about your baby’s feeding patterns, you should always speak to your healthcare provider. 😊
If you are happy to offer more night feeds than this guideline, then you do you. If it is not an issue for you, then it will not be my issue either.

Temperament is the foundation of personality, shaping a child's initial reactions.
Personality is formed over time through temperament and life experiences, including environmental influences like parenting and culture. Whether a baby is a sensory seeker or has a low threshold for sensory input will affect their sleep, feeding, development, and mood or temperament.
The 4 different baby personalities:
The social butterfly 🦋
- Outgoing, curious, and energetic
- Doesn't like to be left alone
- High need for sensory input and social connection.
- Love to be carried around
- Very busy and can be impulsive
The settled baby 😎
- Easy going and flexible
- Can eat and sleep with ease
- Fit into the routine from a young age
- They are not easily woken by noise or activity
- Mood is usually calm
The Slow-to-warm-up baby ☺️
- Highly reactive to sensory stimuli
- Cautions in new environments or with unfamiliar people
- Known as Velcro baby because they are happiest when near mum or dad
- Predictable routines help them feel secure
- They tend to observe from a distance before joining in
The Sensitive baby 🥹
· Easily overwhelmed with stimulation
· Express their sensory overload through fussiness and crying
· Difficulty in self-soothing
· Resist being swaddled or using pacifiers

As they have never been exposed to solid foods before, it can be a bit of a shock to your baby’s digestive system 😱
Bowel movements can speed up/slow down and also change colour depending on the foods being offered. As with any drastic changes in diet, there can also be some tummy upset along the way which may affect sleep.
The good news is, the ‘shock’ should only be short-term 😅
From a 💩 perspective, some foods you offer will slow things down and some will speed things up. If you are mindful of the amount of ‘slow’ and ‘fast’ foods you are offering each day it can help your baby cope with the changes in bowel habits a little better.
Some first food types and how they may affect your baby’s bowel (remember, each baby can react differently) :
Fast foods:
🍐 Pear, zucchini, prunes, kiwi, berries.
Slow foods:
🥑 Avocado, rice cereals, bananas, white potatoes, carrots.
Gassy foods:
🍠 Sweet potatoes, broccoli, onions, cauliflower, beans.
